Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh Pirates – Thursday May 6, 2010 7:05 pm

Starting Pitchers:

Chicago: Randy Wells
Pittsburgh: Brian Burres

Baseball Gambling Lines:

Chicago -140, Pittsburgh +130
Total: 9 o +100

The Chicago Cubs just can’t seem to get things going so far this season. They entered this three game set with the Pittsburgh Pirates at 13-13, but they have lost in the first two games and now sit two below .500.

The Cubs offense is batting .273, but they just aren’t getting those key hits needed to drive in runs.

Aramis Ramirez is struggling mightily, and he is normally their main man with runners in scoring position. The starting pitchers have been a bit inconsistent, but Carlos Marmol has done a solid job locking down the closer spot.

The Cubs still have the talent to make a run at the playoffs, but they’ll have to start coming together as a team and performing up to expectations.

The Pittsburgh Pirates were picked to be the cellar dwellers once again in the National League Central before the season.

To say that they have had issues against the Brewers is a bit of an understatement, but the Pirates have done a nice job winning at home. Pittsburgh is 7-4 on the year at home. If you just looked at the statistics you would wonder how Pittsburgh has won 11 games so far this year.

The Pirates rank last in baseball in ERA and quality starts from their pitchers and average just 3.44 runs per game.

Randy Wells has been the Chicago Cubs most consistent pitcher both last year and so far this season. He finished last year with a nice 3.05 ERA and has a 3.45 ERA thus far this year.

Wells has great control and because of that he avoids big innings quite well. He averages only one walk per start this season.

Brian Burres is a pitcher that has had to work extremely hard to get to where he is today. Through most of his career he has been bouncing from team to team, and sometimes between the minors and the majors. He got some chances to start for Baltimore in 2007 and 2008, with limited success.

With the Pirates he is now getting another chance because of their lack of depth in the starting rotation.

There is no denying that the Cubs have owned the Pirates in recent years.

The Cubs are 27-9 in their last 36 meetings with the Pirates. They are also 8-3 in their last 11 games at PNC Park.

Betting Trends:

Pittsburgh is 4-1 SU in their last 5 games when playing the Cubs
Pittsburgh is 9-4 SU in its last 13 games at home
Pittsburgh is 5-10 SU in its last 15 games
Pittsburgh is 6-15 SU in their last 21 games when playing The Cubs
The Cubs are 8-3 SU in their last 11 games when playing on the road against Pittsburgh
The Cubs are 15-6 SU in their last 21 games when playing Pittsburgh
The Cubs are 1-4 SU in their last 5 games when playing Pittsburgh

Cubs vs. Pirates Free MLB Pick

Cubs Money Line – I know the Cubs haven’t been impressive in this series so far, but I think they have a decisive edge on the mound in this one. Brian Burres probably won’t last too long and the Pirates bullpen is terrible as well.

Randy Wells should give the Cubs another solid start and help them at least salvage a game in this three game series.
