The Cubs (8-16) enter Tuesday’s contest as winners of one of their last five contests after taking one of a three-game set against the Brewers on Sunday.

Short stop Starlin Castro hit a pair of home runs and Jason Hammel pitched seven scoreless innings as visiting Chicago shut out Milwaukee, 4-0.

The win snapped a four-game skid for Chicago, which will go with Jeff Samardzija on Tuesday, in a pitchers rematch of April 18, when the Cubs fell to the Reds 4-1.

Samardzija struck out seven over seven innings in that one, but was charged with three runs on six hits. The right-hander has been on the wrong end of pitchers’ duels since August, as he is winless in his last 11 outings.

He went just over seven inning and gave up two runs his last time out against Arizona, and is 1-4 with a 4.52 ERA in eight starts against Cincinnati.

Meanwhile, the Reds (11-14) are coming off a 1-0 loss in 10 innings Sunday at Atlanta, pushing their one-run loss streak to10 already this season.

Freddie Freeman’s RBI single in the extra frames gave the Braves the win, as they completed a three-game sweep.

Cincinnati will hope to turn things around by sending Alfredo Simon to the mound in game one on Tuesday. The 32-year-old, has won two straight starts, including a six-inning stint in a win on April 18, versus the Cubs.

The win pushed his record to 2-0 with a 2.16 ERA in 11 career appearances against Chicago.

He yielded just one unearned run on four hits before in that one, as the Reds rolled to their 16th win in their last 17 games in Chicago.

Betting Trends

  • CHC are 7-19 in their last 26 road games.
  • CHC are 18-47 in their last 65 Tue. games.
  • Under is 18-7-2 in CHC last 27 road games.
  • Under is 15-6-1 in CIN last 22 home games.
  • CIN are 4-10 in their last 14 home games.
  • CHC are 19-49 in the last 68 meetings.

The Cubs have scored one run or fewer in three of Samardzija’s four outings, so the offense will need to step it up here.

In the meantime, Simon will need to come up with a solution for Chicago’s Castro, who has now posted two multi-homer performances during his career on Sunday, and already has already tallied four home runs this season.

Notes:

1. Cincinnati 3B Todd Frazier is 6-for-19 with two home runs against Samardzija, making him the only current Reds player with a blast versus the Cubs’ ace.

2. Cubs RHP Jake Arrieta was expected to come off the disabled list and make his 2014 debut Wednesday against the Reds, but the rainout means his start will be pushed back to this weekend’s series versus St. Louis.

3. Chicago SS Starlin Castro recorded the second multi-homer performance of his career Sunday and already has four home runs after hitting only 10 last season.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Reds –

The Reds have struggled to get their offense going after being outscored 10-5 over three losses in Atlanta.

Nevertheless, I’m taking them here, as they have found a way to beat the Cubs in the past and will do it again.
