MLB Lines – O’s vs Yankees

The Yanks (4-4) are coming off a thorough spanking delivered by the hands of their division rivals, the Orioles (3-5). The O’s won yesterday’s ballgame 14-5; the Bronx Bombers and their fans expect shoddy performances like that to be an outlier.

Today’s MLB Matchup Stats | Today’s MLB Insider Preview

Yankees starter Ivan Nova, whom most expect to make the big leap this season, got pummelled for 10 hits and seven runs earned, in not even four innings of work last night. New York will hope Tanaka, the prized offseason acquisition from Japan, can right the ship.

Baltimore has gotten off to a slow start in 2014, but its offense exploded last night. Designated hitter Delmon Young (who splits time with free-agent pickup Nelson Cruz) and catcher Matt Wieters both contributed three RBI in a resounding win on the road.

But that’s the thing about the Major Leagues: there’s always the next day.

The Pinstripers had a boatload of “gets” in the offseason, some have worked out better than others so far (though it’s still very early on). Outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury, shipped over from the hated Red Sox, has been a revelation. He’s put up an awesome .414-.469-.517 line (batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage) and used his trademark speed in the field and on the basepaths.

Fellow new faces Carlos Beltran and Brian McCann have yet to wake up in a regular season that’s just coming out of hibernation. Batting .185 (Beltran) and .172 (McCann) won’t cut the mustard.

Still, the Yanks can take solace that those veteran hitters should snap out of their funk any day now.

Baltimore’s pitching staff isn’t anything special. Wednesday night’s starter Gonzalez only lasted three and a third innings in his 2014 debut. Free-agent acquisition Ubaldo Jimenez hasn’t looked great yet either.

The Orioles will live and die with their bats in 2014. It’s a good thing that their lineup is one of the more dangerous you’ll see in the American League. The O’s already rank top 10 in the Majors in runs scored and batting average, and should only further cement those figures as the season matures.

With 2013 breakout 1B Chris Davis, SS J.J. Hardy and CF Adam Jones, Baltimore has some true thumpers in the lineup. Especially playing in Yankee Stadium with the notorious short porch in right field, these hitters will usually make hay when the sun shines.

Yet baseball is a funny game; an offensive explosion like last night usually produces a humble result the following day. When you add in the potential of big-money Japanese import Tanaka, it should be more of a pitcher’s game Wednesday.

MLB Betting Prediction

Tanaka was resilient in his first start of the season against the Blue Jays. He surrendered a homer to Melky Cabrera – the first batter he faced – but then settled down, pitched seven solid innings, rung up eight batters and earned a win. New York’s latest player from across the Pacific will need that thick skin pitching in the AL East.

I like New York’s chances to atone for yesterday’s embarrassment. Another good outing from Tanaka should get even a snobby fan base like the Yankees’s excited. Power hitters like Beltran, McCann and Alfonso Soriano will snap out of their slumps sooner rather than later.

But I also think Gonzalez will recover somewhat from the last frightful turn in the Baltimore rotation, so take the under on runs scored.

New York 5, Baltimore 2
