Atlanta

Heading into Monday they were third in the Majors in team ERA which has sustained them even though their hitting has not been very good with the exception of 1B Freddie Freeman.

Odds are the lineup will pick things up but I am not confident they can keep pitching the way they have been so far. This is the middle game of a series that is pretty important even though it is early.

David Hale is making just his 5th career start so there is still not much of a book on him. Last year in two starts he was dynamite with a 14/1 K/BB ratio but this year he has been playing with fire by walking more than he strikes out so far.

It is a small sample size but he has been two different pitchers at home and away with the road being preferable for the youngster which is rare. He has not pitched deep in either start this season.

Philadelphia

Philadelphia is probably going to be a tease all season long. You know there is talent on this team. All you have to do is look at Chase Utley batting .500 or Jimmy Rollins’ late game heroics to see that there is enough in place for the Phillies to make a run.

There will probably be moments where they have more in common with a retirement than a baseball team but I believed pre-season and now that they can be a factor in the NL East race this year.

If they can win this series they could be in first place by the end of it.

Lefty Cliff Lee got off to a rough start in their opener but has been very good ever since. Lee is a control freak who has given up just one walk on the season and seems to be showing no signs of aging. Over the last three seasons he has been very good against Atlanta with an ERA of 2.37 but his record is just 6-5.

His peripherals including striking out more than a batter per inning should make for a better winning percentage. He has dominated the lefties in the Braves lineup – Freeman and Jason Heyward.

I have supreme confidence in Lee’s ability to limit the Atlanta lineup. As long as he can get enough offensive support this should be an easy victory for the Phillies.

I am seeing it as being low scoring but I can easily get behind the Phillies doing some damage against Hale making it go over as well.
