Padding Your Bankroll on Friday October 10
National horse racing handicapper Michael Dempsey will attempt to pad his bankroll and yours with his daily column. He will feature at least one Pick 3 or Pick 4 play from a major track along with coverage of major stakes races, longshots, and he will keep you up to date on what is happening on the circuits he covers.
Both Keeneland and Belmont Park have great looking cards on Friday. I came up with 17 Price Plays, horses I think have a shot of being in the mix and are at least 8/1 on the morning line.
We are also going against the favorite in both of our plays of the day. The play of the day at Belmont Park is a restricted $25,000 claiming race in which Clemens sure looks like a bounce candidate.
At Keeneland, we will look for a couple of prices in a maiden special weight race.
Today’s Play of the Day from Belmont Park:
BEL Race 5 Clm $25,000B (3:08 et)
#9 Five Card Poker 4/1
#8 Clemens 2/1
#4 Handsome Reward 8/1
#2 Sleek Hunter 6/1
Analysis: #9 Five Star Poker dueled for the early lead in between foes and weakened in the stretch to finish third last out against $35K foes. The colt was claimed out of the race by the Tony D. barn that is 33% winners (with a +ROI) first off the claim. Looks like the right spot jamming him in for a $25K tag here. The colt owns a solid pace profile throughout. #8 Clemens went gate to wire to beat restricted $22.5K claimers, a race for non winners of three or straight three year olds. The runner up in the race was Ready in the Morn, who came back to beat $15K non winners of two in his next start. The price will be short and this guy has the look of a runner ready to bounce off that career top last out if gets some pressure early.
WIN: #9 to win at 5/2 or better.
EX: 8,9 / 2,4,8,9
TRI: 8,9 / 2,4,8,9 / 1,2,4,8,9
Today’s Play of the Day from Keeneland:
KEE Race 6 Md Sp Wt (3:40 et)
#2 Seaside Home 5/1
#12 Southern Surge 15/1
#7 Pull Dancer 2/1
#8 Waccamaw 6/1
Analysis: #2 Seaside Home prompted the early pace from the outside and took over the lead heading for home but had to settle for third last out. It was an improvement over his debut where he was outrun in the slop at the Spa, a highly graded race that produced four next out winners. Among them was Selva, who won the $100K Sorority in her next start at Monmouth on 8/31. A nice pedigree on this gal, by Storm Cat out of the Grindstone mare Sand Dollar, who has dropped a pair of winners, top earner Ocean Current ($151K).
#12 Southern Surge makes her debut for the Margolis barn that is 6% winners with firsters. he $65K Keeneland purchase has win early in the pedigree, by Meadowlake (18% winners with debut runners) out of the Southern Halo mare Southern Lass, who has dropped two other foals to race, both winners, top earner Mississippi Storm ($99K). Solid works on the morning tab and we should catch a generous price on this gal.
WIN: #2 to win at 3/1 or better.
EX: 2,12 / 2,7,8,12
TRI: 2,12 / 2,7,8,12 / 2,6,7,8,10,12
These are price plays to watch today. A small win-place wager is in order or if your pockets are deep enough, use these runners in your trifecta and Pick 3 and Pick 4 wagers. One or two of these could be the difference between a regular day at the track and hitting the IRS window with a signer.
