The Triple Crown horse racing season continues this Saturday, May 21 with the second jewel of the crown, the Preakness Stakes from Pimlico Racetrack in Baltimore, Maryland. Post time is set for 6:15 p.m. (ET) for the expected field of 14 and the race will be broadcast nationally on NBC.

There is a certain buzz in the air in anticipation of Saturday’s race as Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom is the early favorite in most books. Bodog.com has opened him at 2/1 and now has the odds he will go on to win the Triple Crown with a victory in the Belmont Stakes in early June at +550. The odds he will not still remain high at -900, but given the fact that the last horse to pull off this off was Affirmed back in 1978, you can see why the level of interest is high for this race.

Since then, 11 horses have managed to win the first two legs, but have failed to win the longest of the three races; the 1 ½ mile Belmont. The last horse that won the first two legs was Big Brown in 2008.

Animal Kingdom is trained by Graham Motion and will once again be ridden by John Velazquez, who was a late replacement for Robby Albarado. The three-year old colt raced for the first time on dirt in the Kentucky Derby and his biggest win before that race was in the grade III Spiral Stakes at Turfway on March 26. He has three wins and two seconds in five career races and now has $1,696,800 in career earnings.

Dialed In and Mucho Macho Man are the second favorites at 5/1. Dialed In went off as the 5/1 favorite in the Derby after Uncle Mo was scratched but could only manage an eighth-place finish in the crowded 19-horse field. He is trained by Nick Zito and will be ridden by Julien Leparoux. This colt’s first major stakes victory was in the grade III Holy Bull at Gulfstream, but he moved to the top of the rankings with a win in the grade I Florida Derby on April 3 as the second choice.

Mucho Macho Man is trained by Katherine Ritvo and will be ridden by Rajiv Maragh. He was able to close hard in the Kentucky Derby to take third-place, just a neck behind Nehro. This colt has never finished worse than fourth in his career but only has one major stakes race victory to his credit; a win in the grade II Risen Star on February 19.

The fourth-favorite is Shackleford at 8/1. He set the pace in the Kentucky Derby and carried the lead all the way to into the stretch, but ran out of steam with a fourth-place finish. Trained by Dale Romans and ridden by Jesus Castanon, he also set the pace in the Florida Derby but was edged out by a head to finish second behind Dialed In. He has yet to win a major graded stakes race as a three-year old.

If you are looking for value in the current odds then take a hard look at Midnight Interlude at 14/1. Despite the fact he is coming off a disappointing 16th-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, he still has a victory in the grade II Santa Anita Derby in early April on his resume and is trained by one of the best in the business, Bob Baffert. Veteran jockey Martin Garcia, who led Lookin at Lucky to a victory in last year’s Preakness, will be aboard for the run in this year’s race.
