The 2011 Triple Crown racing season comes to a close this Saturday with the 143rd running of the Belmont Stakes from Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. This race is contested on a dirt track over a distance 1 ½ miles making it the longest and most grueling test of the three for these three-year old Thoroughbreds.

2011 Belmont Stakes – Betting Preview

Animal Kingdom 5/2

This horse went off as a 21/1 longshot in the Kentucky Derby but used a strong kick down the stretch to win the race by 2 ¾ lengths. As the 2/1 favorite in the Preakness, he once again ran most of the race from the middle of the field, but this time his come-from-behind stretch run fell a half a length short with a second-place finish.

Trained by H. Graham Motion and ridden by John Velazquez, the key to winning the Belmont will be his ability to maintain that closing speed over the extended distance of this race.

Nehro 7/2

Trainer Steve Asmussen’s entry in the Belmont, Nehro comes into this race well rested after skipping the Preakness.

This horse has been a bridesmaid but never a bride this season with three straight second-place finishes in major stakes races. The first was in the grade II Louisiana Derby in late March. He followed this up with a second-place finish in the grade I Arkansas Derby in mid-April and was second to Animal Kingdom in the Derby.

The extra rest could work in Nehro’s favor given that three of the top four contenders ran in both Triple Crown races. [ad-1605881]

Shackleford 5/1

After setting the pace in his two previous races only to finish second in the Florida Derby and fourth in Kentucky, trainer Dale Romans had jockey Jesus Castanon hold him back a bit in the Preakness before taking him to the lead. The strategy worked to perfection as he had enough left in the tank to hold off Animal Kingdom for the win.

The big question for Shackleford will be can this strategy work again in a longer race?

Master of Hounds 6/1

This horse did not run in any of the American prep races as a three-year old, but did record a second-place finish in the UAE Derby in Dubai. He ran near the back of the field for a good portion of the Kentucky Derby, but show great closing speed with a fifth-place finish. He did not run in the Preakness.

Trained by Aiden O’Brian and ridden by Garrett Gomez, it is hard to know what to expect from this horse in this race, given his limited experience in major stakes races.

Mucho Macho Man 15/2

This is another veteran of both Triple Crown races and crowd favorite despite the fact that the grade II Risen Star is his only graded stakes race win this year.

Trained by Katherine Ritvo and ridden by Rajiv Maragh, he did finish third in the Kentucky Derby after rallying down the stretch from the middle of the pack.

He finished a disappointing sixth in the Preakness after failing to produce another strong kick over the final furlongs of the race. The fact that he did run both races may actually work against him on Saturday.
