Former Head Coach Josh McDaniels created some excitement by winning the first six games of the 2009 season, before crashing and burning with just five wins in his next 22.

Long time veteran coach John Fox, who was relieved of his duties in Carolina after last season, takes over the reins in an effort to bring some stability back to this franchise.

His first order of business will be to determine who will be his starting quarterback on opening day when Oakland comes to town.

Right now the Broncos have Kyle Orton, Brady Quinn, and Tim Tebow on the roster as the current candidates for the job. Because of the players’ lockout, the situation may not be resolved until sometime late in the preseason, but insiders say that Fox may go out on a limb and hand the starting job to Tebow.

Whoever gets the nod will need more support from a running game that was ranked 26th in the league last season with an average of just 96.5 yards a game. Knowshon Moreno was the leading rusher in 2010 with 779 yards, which was a step back from the 947 yards he gained as a rookie the year before. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Even more pressing then the situation at quarterback, could be the dire situation with this team’s defense. They were one of the worst units across the board last season, ranking near the bottom of league in almost every major category.

Denver used the second overall pick in the draft to select LB Von Miller from Texas A&M. They followed this up by taking FS Rahim Moore in the second round and LB Nate Irving in the third.

All told, the Broncos used six of their nine picks on the defensive side of the ball, but do not expect any immediate results given the lack of preparation for all the rookies in the league this season due to the lockout.

Denver is squarely is a rebuilding mode, especially if Fox decides to hand the keys to the car to Tebow.

It has bits and pieces of solid talent scattered throughout the roster and is in a good position to add a few more pieces once free agency opens up, but even the most optimistic prognosis has this team penciled-in with a losing record this year.

Fox might as well prepare for a long season in Mile High, but if he decides to go with Tebow under center, it may give Denver fans something to look forward to for the future.
