The Seahawks were another team that pulled off one of the biggest upsets of Week 1, as the rolled by the heavily favored San Diego Chargers, 31-6 in their home-opener.

San Diego, who was considered the most likely candidate to repeat as the AFC West’s division champs, was held to just 263 total yards while converting 1 of 15 third-down conversions, by a much-improved Seattle defense that was ranked 24th overall just a season ago.

Seattle stymied the San Francisco ground attack by limiting 49ers’ two-time Pro Bowl running back Frank Gore to 38 yards on 17 carries while forcing one fumble.

After struggling for most of the 2009 campaign, quarterback Matt Hasselbeck turned in a valiant performance, tossing two touchdown receptions and running in Seattle’s first from 1-yard out, giving the Seahawks a 7-6 lead early in the second.

Meanwhile, the Broncos defense fell apart, as Jags’ QB David Garrard, WR Mike Thomas, and powerhouse RB Maurice Jones-Drew all had breakout days in the team’s 24-17 victory.

But you can’t blame all for Denver’s transgressions on the defense. The O-line that has been somewhat of a blemish on the Broncos’ 2010 resume can be faulted just as much.

They did very little in protecting quarterback Kyle Orton who was sacked three times and hit during several other occasions, but hung in there finishing 21-of-33 for 295 yards with a touchdown.

Again, under pressure with less than a minute remaining, Orton tossed a game-changing interception, killing Denver’s last chance to tie the game.

However, the Denver O-line’s problems didn’t just end with their inability to protect Orton, as they also struggled to open its fair share running lanes for RB Knowshon Moreno who was held to just 60 yards on 15 attempts, of the 89 rushing yards the Broncos tallied.

Things don’t look like they are going to change much for the Broncos as now they will now do business with a Seattle defense who might just be that much better as linebacker Leroy Hill makes his return after serving a one-game league suspension.

Seattle won the last meeting between the two teams, 23-20, on a late field goal by Josh Brown in Denver on Dec. 3, 2006.

The Broncos, which opened last year with six straight victories, have won 10 consecutive home openers, the longest streak in the NFL.

Mile-High is a tough place to play for sure. The air is thin and the fans are a noisy bunch making it difficult for even the best of teams to win. However, I believe that Carroll will have his boys primed, and coming off a big win in Week 1 can only fuel their desire to knock off Denver at home.

I’m going against the odds on this one, as the only ones sucking air at the end of this one is the home team.
