Minnesota

The Vikings had a chance to resurrect their season with a win against Green Bay but fell short in familiar fashion.  They are already two wins behind NFC Central leaders GB and Chicago and are losing ground in a very crowded NFC playoff picture.  The rest of their schedule is not too daunting though, so if they could come up with an upset win this week they would have a chance at a nice run in November.

It is anybody’s guess whether Favre will start or even play this weekend.  Given everything that is swirling and the quality of his play he is due for a sit down but I doubt the coach will have the stones to do it unless he is truly unable to go.  No matter who starts you can bet on two things.  The first is that Randy Moss will be itching to provide some drama to his return to New England and that Bill Belichick will look to make it a very confusing game for the opposing pivot.

Regardless of who is the QB the best strategy for the Vikings if they want to win is to lean on Adrian Peterson and the running game – isn’t his nickname All Day.  If Peterson is going well they can take the pressure of the QB and try and shorten the game a bit.  New England’s passing D is not highly rated but the Vikings are still better off sticking to what they do best which is running the football.

New England

This Patriots team is not as good as previous editions but they have played more than a third of the season and they have only one loss to the Jets.  Although they are nowhere near the top of the yardage rankings New England is averaging more points per game than any other team at just under 30.  They have been very opportunistic with their chances even though they have not looked like an elite team for long stretches.

Despite the wins there is something up with the offense this season.  QB Tom Brady’s numbers are OK but even before the trade of Moss things seemed a little off.  Wunderkind WR Wes Welker is averaging only 8 yards a catch and the leading receiver is a rookie TE, Aaron Hernadez.  This is no knock to Hernandez but that is not what the team was expecting at the beginning of the season.  If they want to keep their winning ways this team needs to step it up and make some plays…something Moss was really good at.

There will be some juice to this one with the return of Moss but other than that there is not much connection between these two teams.  Both have been very good for most of this decade but because they reside in separate conferences they have not played each other since 2006.  New England owned them in that one 31-7 but I think a much closer battle can be expected this Sunday.  This one should be entertaining from the get go.

The Pick: The Minny QB situation is a mess no matter how it plays out on the field.  New England is perfect at home this season and the Vikings haven’t won on the road.  Both those streaks should continue.
