Week 1 was full of surprises for teams, some good and some not so good as the Jaguars edged out the Broncos 24-17 in their home-opener while a much-heralded San Diego Chargers lost its battle with the Chiefs on the soggy gridiron of Arrowhead Stadium.

Jacksonville piled on a game-leading 299 offensive yards, led by solid effort from running back Maurice Jones-Drew who finished the game with 98 yards on 23 carries. However, the biggest and most welcome surprise came from QB  David  Garrard as he turned in one of his best performances ever, throwing for 170 yards while completing 16 of 21 passes and three TDs.

Meanwhile, the Chargers’ Phillip Rivers racked up 295 yards finding the end zone twice, but a costly pair of incompletions from inside Kansas City 10-yard line stalled a late San Diego drive that negated any chance for a comeback, resulting in a 21-14 loss to the underdog Chiefs.

Despite Rivers efforts, it was the debut of highly touted rookie running back Ryan Mathews that was by far the most disappointing. The Fresno State graduate rushed for just 75 yards on 19 carries with one fumble in his NFL regular season debut. Not the result that head coach Norv Turner was looking for, as Mathews has been regarded as San Diego’s second coming of departing Pro-Bowl RB Ladainian Tomlinson.

Defensively both teams played fairly well against their first week’s opponents rushing attack, especially Jacksonville’s front seven led by LB Kirk Morrison.  This could be an added problem for Mathews, who will need to adjust quickly to the NFL if the Chargers run game is to have any success.

On the opposite side of the line of scrimmage, the Jaguars will give an anemic San Diego front four a good look at Jones-Drew all day.

The Chargers’ problems stopping the run will likely be compounded by the absence of Pro Bowl LB Shawn Merriman, who has been listed as doubtful because of an Achilles’ heel injury.

San Diego gave up 160 yards on five punt returns Monday, one area they will need to make quick repairs.

The Bolts’ success will be hinged on Rivers’ ability to successfully throw the football at a gaunt Jaguars secondary that surrendered 295 passing against Denver.

Meanwhile, look for Garrard to have continued success in San Diego, a place where he threw for two touchdowns while Jones-Drew ran for one, in a 24-17 home win over San Diego on Nov. 18, 2007, the last time these two met.

This one is too close to call, but if I have to make a choice –the Jaguars.
