In what might have seemed the biggest upset of Week 1, the Kansas City Chiefs pulled off the inconceivable at a rainy Arrowhead Stadium on Monday, upsetting AFC West champions San Diego, 21-14 in their 2010 home-opener.

The Chiefs got some big plays from its special teams unit and their rushing attack as they surprised the Chargers who were heavily favored.

After falling behind 7-0, Kansas City answered back with three straight touchdowns that started with RB Jamal Charles ripping off a 56-yard TD run and ended with Dexter McCluster returning a punt for a 94-yard touchdown.

The passing game was hampered by the downpour as quarterback Matt Cassel finished with just 68 yards, and a single touchdown, going 10-for-22. His lone TD was to TE Tony Moeaki, who led the receiving corps with just 21 yards.

As for the Cleveland Browns, it appeared as though its chances to open the 2010 season 1-0 was at hand when Jake Delhomme connected with WR Mohamed Massaquoi down the middle for a 41 yard TD, just over two minutes into their game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

But after building a 14-3 lead, it all fell apart for the Browns whose three costly turnovers allowed the Bucs to storm back, eventually pulling ahead 17-14 with just under seven minutes to go.

Two of those turnovers came by way of a pair of Delhomme interceptions, as the new QB went 20 of 37 for 227 yards in his debut for the Browns.

Now Cleveland will prepare to face a Kansas City team they rolled in a 41-34 victory the last time they met. RB Jerome Harrison had a record-setting day, rushing for 286 yards while Josh Cribbs contributed a pair of kickoff returns that resulted in two TDs.

Neither of them made a big contribution in their Week 1 game at Tampa Bay, but should be up to the task this weekend.

On a side note, this game is likely to carry some bad blood, as the Chiefs have not forgotten when tight end Brad Cottam had his neck broken by Cleveland safety Abram Elam and outside linebacker Matt Roth last December.

Oddly enough, the Chiefs are +2 underdogs in this matchup as the Browns hold a slight edge with the odds makers. However, it’s doubtful that Cleveland can get past a much-improved Kansas City Chiefs team including a defense that kept San Diego from scoring inside the 10-yard line in the closing seconds of last week’s game. Cleveland still has not begun a season with a win since 2004, and is 1-11 in home-openers in 11 seasons. I just don’t see that changing come Sunday afternoon.
