March Madness betting is getting underway,  but there is still the matter of the “First Four”, which will decide the last four teams to get into the 64-team bracket. All four matchups will take place in Dayton, Ohio, and the most intriguing features Texas-San Antonio against Alabama State in a battle of offense versus defense, and we’re giving the nod to the defensive team, who will earn the right to go on and likely get slaughtered by Ohio State in the East region.

The Roadrunners (19-13, 9-7 Southland) beat Northwestern State, Sam Houston State and McNeese State to win the Southland tournament, averaging 83.7 points per game. Senior guard Devin Gibson does it all for the Roadrunners, while Melvin Johnson III and Jeromie Hill are excellent wingmen on the offensive end of the floor, and while the Roadrunners aren’t great defensively, they have been getting the important stops when they need to. Will that be enough to get them into the March Madness bracket?

The Hornets (17-17, 11-7) rolled over Alabama A&M, Texas Southern and Grambling State to take the Southwestern Conference, and they are where they are due to a defense which is 67th in points allowed. Tramayne Moorer is their best offensive weapon, but Tramaine Butler has been stepping up to support Moorer. The Hornets will need a bit more out of Ivory White in the post, but if Alabama is going to pull off this upset, they’ll need their defense to continue to play at a high level. The defense is the main reason that the Hornets have won 11 of their last 12 games heading into this play-in game, and confidence is high right now.

UTSA is a 4.5-point favorite in your pay per head sportsbook, and they’re in the Tournament field for the first time since 2004, while the Hornets were here most recently in 2009. Look for the Hornets to focus their defensive strategies on Gibson, because if you can slow him down, you have a good chance to beat the Roadrunners. The Hornets also have momentum on their side with their 12-game stretch, and their only loss was a one-point loss on the road, and you can’t underestimate the power of momentum and confidence at this time of year. Alabama State feels like they can lock down any team in the country, and we are more apt to lean towards a good defense than a good offense. Alabama State is a deep team who can run a number of different defenders at Gibson, and we think that will be the difference.

Pick: Take Alabama State for the sports betting upset.

Poolside Rants hails from beautiful Bozeman Montana by way of Toronto, Canada. (Blame his wife for the move). He’s a Dallas Cowboys football honk. But please….don’t hold that against him. The man knows his sports and has uncanny knowledge when it comes to picking games.
