New York Jets vs. Denver Broncos Preview

49th place?! That’s how far down you have to scroll to find a Denver Bronco on the list of leading NFL ball-carriers this season. And that’s the problem the Broncos face this coming Sunday when the New York Jets arrive in Denver and release hellfire and damnation on a one-dimensional offense that the horses have trotted out for five straight weeks this season.

The Broncos gave it the old college try this season. They penciled in Knowshon Moreno for 20 carries a game and 1,200 yards for the season, but he pulled up lame in Game 3, hasn’t played since and may never be 100 percent this season. Correll Buckhalter is healthy but has been ineffective, and Laurence Maroney (29 carries for 56 yards) has accomplished nothing except shown why the Patriots made him available for trade a few weeks ago.

Denver somehow pieced things together enough to beat Tennessee on the road, but QB Kyle Orton had to throw the ball 50 times when Buckhalter and Maroney combined for a measly 8 yards on 17 carries. In fact, Orton has aired it out so much this season that he already has thrown for more than 300 yards in a game four times and is on pace to set the NFL record for yards passing in a season. No doubt the 3-1 Jets, who come in oozing confidence after beating the Vikings on Monday night, can’t wait to unleash it pass-rushers on Orton. The NYJ live to get after quarterbacks, and when good defenders don’t have to worry about getting beaten on the ground, QBs quickly become chum in shark-infested waters.

As if figuring out a way for his pas-first-and-pass-only offense to move the ball against one of the top defensive teams in the NFL doesn’t give Josh McDaniels a big-enough ice cream headache, there are also problems on the other side of the ball.

New York is not quite a big-play offense, but the return of Santonio Holmes puts more spine in a passing attack that was OK to begin with. In case anyone hasn’t noticed, Mark Sanchez has not thrown an interception this season. And just for kicks, LaDainian Tomlinson is at it again.

Picks: Jets -3 and Over (40)

Besides being 4-1 SU this season, the Jets are also 4-1 ATS and 4-1 on the over.

Figuring both of those streaks to continue this week as the 3 is way too thin.

Denver was never in last Sunday’s game against Baltimore, and the Ravens gave the Broncos a mercy TD in the fourth period when they were keep defenders in front of them in garbage time.
