College Football Betting – Gamecocks Host Southern Miss. On ESPN Thursday Night
The online sports betting college football season gets underway this week, with the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles traveling to Williams Brice Stadium to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks under the national spotlight on ESPN.
This will be the first meeting between these schools. The Golden Eagles were originally supposed to play Southeastern Louisiana this weekend, but made the decision to reschedule that game for later on in the season.
The line has reached double digits, which seems a bit much to lend a solid team in Southern Miss., and players may be able to capitalize on the oddsmakers underestimating the Golden Eagles.

NCAA Football Betting Line: South Carolina – 13.5
What Southern Miss. Will Have To Do To Win
Southern Mississippi has been the definition of mediocre over the past few years, finishing 7-6 three years in a row in the conference USA. The Golden Eagles have enough talent to compete for top spot in the East division this year, and a relatively easy schedule could lead to head coach Larry Fedora’s squad surprising at least a few college football betting pundits. Continuity will be the key for Southern Mississippi, who return all 13 starters on offense, including star quarterback Austin Davis.
Davis has a variety of playmakers to spread the ball around with, none better than giant wide receiver DeAndre Brown, who should cause match up problems for defenses. The Golden Eagles are not as strong on defense, but have enough talent that they could bait the Gamecocks in to making mistakes.
What South Carolina Will have To Do To Win
The Gamecocks have never won more than eight games under head coach Steve Spurrier. Still, several football observers feel that this is the year that they can contend in the SEC East as perennial power Florida gets used to life without Tim Tebow and several others that left via the NFL betting draft. Spurrier will have one of the most talented recruits in the nation in its backfield in running back Marcus Lattimore, and that should take some of the pressure off of quarterback Stephen Garcia.
Garcia has repeatedly received criticism for coming up short in important games, and Spurrier is hoping this is the season that Spurrier’s patience is finally rewarded.
The Match Up: Southern Mississippi vs South Carolina
Unlike many of the other opening week match ups, the Golden Eagles actually have a legitimate shot at pulling off an upset over a South Carolina team that despite being more talented is not unbeatable.
Considering that there isn’t a big enough disparity between these teams that an upset is impossible, it’s unreasonable to think that the Golden Eagles can’t cover a double-digit betting on sports spread.
Pick: Southern Mississippi + 14.5
