Kansas State Wildcats vs. Syracuse Orange Preview

The Pinstripe Bowl is the first bowl game in the Bronx in 48 years and with Syracuse (7-5) located in New York they may have some home field advantage in this game. Kansas State (7-5) blew out of the gates winning their first 4 games, but they sputtered at the end of the season losing 4 of their last 6 games even though they did win their season finale. The Orange also did not end the season well losing 3 of their last 4 games. College football lines have this as an even pickem game with a total of 48.

In their last games of the season Kansas State beat North Texas 49-41 while Syracuse lost to Boston College 16-7.

This season the Wildcats were 6-6 ATS and the Orange were 7-6 ATS. The Wildcats have failed to cover the spread in their last 4 bowl games.

The Orange are playing in their first bowl game since 2004 and they will be playing this game without DT Andrew Lewis and LB Brice Hawkes, who were both suspended from the team for violating team rules. Syracuse has the 5th ranked defense in the nation and they may need to rely on their D since their passing and rushing offense does not rank in the top 87 in the nation.

Kansas State only has the nation’s 106th ranked defense, but their offense, especially their rushing offense, is legit and they ranked 25th in the nation scoring an average of 33.6 points per game.

The Wildcats are led by their 20th ranked rushing offense with RB Daniel Thomas, who was 2nd in the Big 12 with 1,495 rushing yards and tied for the conference lead with 16 TD. He may have to shoulder the offensive load since the Kansas State passing offense only ranks 97th in the nation. In the win over North Texas in their last game of the season Thomas rushed for a career high 269 yards with 2 TD. He will be going up against a Syracuse rushing defense that ranks 42nd in the nation.

Kansas State QB Carson Coffman has passed for over 200 yards 3 times this season and the Wildcats lost 2 of those games. Because of that Thomas is THE man in this game, as if the Orange can contain him they will likely be sitting pretty.

The Orange do not have a dynamic offense, but at least they are well balanced ranking 92nd in the nation in passing yards per game and 88th in rushing yards per game. Orange QB Ryan Nassib passed for 2,095 yards with 16 TD on the season, but he did not throw a TD in his last 2 games. The strength of the Kansas State defense, if you can call it a strength, is their pass defense ranking 52nd in the nation. However, Nassib will likely have time to find his main targets of WR Van Chew (41 rec 611 yards 5 TD) and RB Antwon Bailey (30 rec 377 yards 2 TD) since the Wildcats’ pass rush only ranks 92nd in the nation with 18 sacks.

Syracuse RB Delone Carter (1,035 yards 7 TD) was injured in the last game of the season, but will be ready to go in this bowl game. He did not play very well to end the season and he did not run for a TD in the Orange’s last 3 games. Carter may be in for a big game because the Kansas State rushing defense only ranks 118th in the nation giving up an average of 229 rushing yards per game.

The Wildcats do not have a good defense and they are the away team, but they have Thomas in the backfield and that will be the difference. The senior RB will have a good game and they will beat the Orange in a close game in the Pinstripe Bowl.

Betting Trends

Kansas State is 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games following an ATS loss and Syracuse is 6-2 ATS in their last 8 non-conference games.
