NFL Odds – Falcons lucky to draw the Roethlisbergerless Steelers in Week 1

The Pittsburgh Steelers start their 2010 campaign at home in Week 1 against a talented and upgraded Falcons team. NFL Odds are that the Steelers will really miss Big Ben and that the 4-6 games without him will certainly be a struggle.

A finally healthy Atlanta Falcons team travels to Pittsburgh in Week 1 of the NFL schedule. Atlanta has had expectations in the past but this year they are as high as ever. NFL odds are that they won’t overtake the New Orleans Saints for the NFC South crown, but a playoff spot is certainly within reach for this young, hungry bunch.

The Falcons have looked good in the past few seasons but have been slowed by injuries to some key members of their offense. Third year quarterback Matt Ryan was plagued by a number of ailments last season as was their All-Pro running back, Michael Turner. With emerging superstar Roddy White and a veteran presence at tight end, Tony Gonzalez, the Atlanta offense is as complete as they have been in years.

The offseason saw the Atlanta Falcons upgrade what was a lousy defense. Shoring up their weaknesses should serve the Falcons well and allow their offense to operate without the urgency they once had to.

The Pittsburgh Steelers go into Week 1 not quite sure who will start at quarterback for them. Dennis Dixon has looked average and Byron Leftwich has not impressed at all. With the departure of Santonio Holmes, Hines Ward will be that stabilizing force for the first third of the season although second year wide out Mike Wallace appears poised to have a major break out season.

Rashard Mendenhall will be the workhorse out of the backfield this season – there is no Willie Parker to threaten his touches. Mendenhall showed flashes last season and has looked good so far in the preseason but questions linger as to whether or not he’s ready for prime time.

Pittsburgh’s defense will be strong once again. Troy Polamolu all by himself makes a good defense. It will be the defense that wins games for the Steelers without Big Ben –  they know that they have to step up and likely will.

NFL Odds Prediction:

The Atlanta Falcons (and everybody else) knows what the Steelers will try to do in Week 1 – run the ball! With no real threat to throw the ball downfield, the Falcons will likely stack the box and dare the Pittsburgh quarterback to beat them through the air. I don’t have any faith in the passing game at all and I think that Atlanta’s balanced offense will score enough to pull off the minor upset.

NFL Gambling Trends to consider:

Atlanta is 8-17 SU in its last 25 games on the road
Pittsburgh is 12-2 SU in its last 14 games at home

Pittsburgh7-1-1 SU in its last 9 games when playing Atlanta

NFL Odds Pick: Atlanta Falcons +3
