St. Louis Rams vs. New Orleans Saints Preview

In a big NFC match up in the Big Easy this Sunday between a couple of teams that really need a win the New Orleans Saints (9-3) host the St. Louis Rams (6-6).

In their last games the Saints needed to come from behind to beat the Cincinnati Bengals 34-30 while the Rams had no trouble beating the Arizona Cardinals 19-6.

The Rams have won 2 straight road games and they have not won 3 straight on the road since 2003 when a guy named Kurt Warner was under center.

The Saints are riding a 5-game winning streak and their offense has played much better in the 2nd half of the season. They have scored at least 30 points in their last 4 games and they trail the Atlanta Falcons by 1 game in the tough NFC South. The Saints have dealt with major injury issues at the RB position, but RB Reggie Bush recently came back and RB Pierre Thomas is slated to come back for this game.

The 2 main reasons the Rams have turned things around is the play of QB Sam Bradford and a much-improved defense. The rookie QB has limited his mistakes in the 2nd half of the season and in his last 7 games he has 11 TD and only 2 INT. The St. Louis defense ranked 31st last season, but this season they rank 14th and also have the league’s 9th ranked scoring defense.

While the Saints have had no problems on offense the same cannot be said about their defense. 2 weeks ago in the win over Dallas they gave up 27 points and 457 yards and last week in the win over Cincinnati they gave up 30 points and 311 yards. If they play D like they have been they will have to score a lot of points to win, which is likely to happen.

Bradford only has a mediocre corps of receivers and he will be facing a Saints’ pass defense that ranks 3rd in the league. RB Steven Jackson is a big key for the Rams’ success this Sunday and last week he rushed for over 100 yards, but he only averaged 3.6 yards per carry. The Saints’ rushing defense is decent ranking 15th in the league. Jackson will have to play well for the Rams to win and he can also help keep Drew Brees and the dynamic offense of New Orleans on the sidelines if he can move the chains and eat up the clock by moving the chains on the ground. Football betting

Brees leads the Saints and their 3rd ranked passing offense and last week against the Bengals he passed for 313 yards with 2 TD and 1 INT. WR Marques Colston (71 rec 875 yards 5 TD) is his main target and the Rams have to shut him down and force Brees into short passes not big ones down the field. The Rams will need to pressure Brees and while their pass rush is much better this season and has the 2nd most sacks this season (35) they will be up against a great offensive line of the Saints, who have only given up 18 sacks.

The Saints only have the league’s 25th ranked rushing offense, but with Bush and Thomas back they may improve upon that ranking this week. Also, last week in the win over Cincinnati RB Chris Ivory rushed for over 100 yards and now Brees has several options in the backfield. The Rams’ rushing defense ranks a respectable 14th in the league and last week they gave up 105 rushing yards to the Cardinals.

It is obvious that the Rams are a better team this season, but their 2-game road winning streak will end this Sunday. Brees will play well and the Saints will win, but since their D has not been playing well the Rams will keep it pretty close and cover the spread.

Betting Trends

The Rams have been one of the better ATS teams this season going 9-3 while the Saints are only 5-7 ATS.
St. Louis is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 road games and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games as an underdog of 3.5-10 and New Orleans is 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games as a home favorite of 3.5-10.

Pick: Rams +9.5

He is anxiously waiting for the first NFL week when his beloved new-look Redskins take on the Cowboys, who is a team Jason has no love for, to say the least.
