Northwestern

November 13 was a day of mixed emotions for the Northwestern Wildcats football team. They beat Iowa in what was their biggest win of the season, but they also lost their star quarterback to injury. Without Dan Persa this isn’t the same team, but they’ll have to try to win without him in this New Year’s Day bowl.

The Northwestern offense relied on Persa for everything, which is why they are struggling so much without him. Persa was the leading rusher and the leading passer on this team. Evan Watkins is now the starter under center for Northwestern. Watkins threw just one touchdown and four interceptions in his time at quarterback this year. He also doesn’t give the team a rushing threat in the backfield. Mike Trumpy is the primary tailback for Northwestern, but this is a team that has had very little success running the ball this year.

The defense of Northwestern did a solid job most of the year, but they were terrible in their last two games of the regular season. Illinois running back Mikel LeShoure ran for more than 300 yards on them, and then Wisconsin scored 70 points on them in the season finale. They know Texas Tech will want to throw the ball early and often, so they must get a solid pass rush in this game.

Texas Tech

Even though there was a completely different coaching staff at Texas Tech this year, the team ran the same style of offense and the defense struggled once again in 2010. Can this team finish the season on a winning note?

Both Taylor Potts and Steven Sheffield will see action at the quarterback position in this game. Potts and Sheffield have both been effective in helping this team be successful on offense, but Potts has had the majority of the playing time. The Red Raiders have eight players who have caught at least 25 passes this year, so they have plenty of options in the passing game. Baron Batch and Eric Stephens are a solid duo at the running back position, but the line hasn’t been great in run blocking this year. This is a team that relies on moving the ball through the air, and they averaged 315 passing yards per game this year.

The Texas Tech defense has struggled mightily this year. Defensive coordinator James Willis stepped down this week and he will not coach in this bowl game. This defense allowed more than 306 yards per game through the air, which was second worst in the entire nation. Northwestern lacks a deep passing game now, but Texas Tech will still need to worry about the short passing attack. The Red Raiders allowed 30 points per game this season.

The Pick:

I would like the Wildcats chances if they had Persa, but without him they aren’t even close to the same team. Texas Tech should be able to throw the ball all over this Northwestern secondary. I think Northwestern will have a good game plan on offense and they’ll put up some points as well. I like the over in this game.

Northwestern vs. Texas Tech Score Prediction: Texas Tech 38 Northwestern 28
