UFC 191: Johnson vs Dodson 2

The UFC returns to Las Vegas and the MGM Grand Garden Arena Saturday where UFC 191 will throw down. Arguably the most dominant champ in the UFC Demetrious Johnson puts his title on the line while Heavyweight mainstays Frank Mir and Andrei Arlovski try to remain relevant in the organization.

It’s a pretty stacked card in Vegas despite the lack of huge names – let’s take a look.

UFC 191 PPV Main Card (10 p.m. ET):

Demetrious Johnson (22-2-1): -450
John Dodson (17-6): +350

The UFC Flyweight Title will be on the line Saturday night when Mighty Mouse Demetrious Johnson defends against a fighter that he has already beaten, back in January, 2013. Dodson actually knocked Johnson down twice in that fight. But the champ’s heart, his conditioning and his all around game prevailed in that fight.

Johnson is one of the most gifted fighters in the game right now – there are zero holes in his game – fast hands and feet, superb wrestling, terrific ground control and stellar defense – what’s not to like? Dodson possesses a lot of the same traits – athleticism, power and quickness.

So who wins? In yet another close battle, the more technical of the two should win in a decision. That distinction belongs to the champion Demetrious Johnson who just doesn’t look like he is beatable right now. It will be a stellar fight for sure with the champ retaining his title.

MMA Betting Pick: Demetrious Johnson -450

Andrei Arlovski (24-10, 1 NC): -175
Frank Mir (18-9): +150

It’s hard to believe that Andrei Arlovski and Frank Mir actually have something on the line at this point of their careers. Both men were essentially written off but have hung around and are in the conversation for a title shot down the line – incredible! Mir enters off Performance of the Night bonuses in his last two fights – wins against Bigfoot Silva and Todd Duffee while Arlovski is undefeated since returning to the organization – the best of which was a TKO over a very tough Travis Browne.

Of the two Arlovski has been the more impressive – Mir made short work of two very average Heavyweights at this point of their respective careers. Long gone are the days where Mir can take people down and submit them on the ground – he has stood and banged the last five years. That strategy plays right into the hands of Arlovski who is the much better striker in this match.

In a grappling match I would go with Mir but this fight likely won’t see the ground – the fighters will stand and trade as long as this match goes. In that case I’ll take Arlovski by KO

MMA Betting Pick: Andrei Arlovski -175

Anthony Johnson (19-5): -475
Jimi Manuwa (15-1): +375

There will be fireworks in this Light Heavyweight battle as two very good strikers look to throw their names into the Title picture in their cloudy division. Both men have serious power and incredible strength.

The X-factor here will likely be the topnotch wrestling ability of Anthony Johnson – he has the ability to take this fight out of his danger zones at any point of the fight. The threat brought about by Johnson’s clinch game and his ability to drag the fight to the mat will likely set something up for him later in the fight.

Johnson is just too well-rounded to be denied here – Manuwa on the other hand isn’t. Johnson’s wrestling will be a factor but something tells me it is his punching power that ends this fight. Look for Johnson to put this one to bed in the second.

MMA Betting Pick: Anthony Johnson -475

Jan Błachowicz (18-4): -150
Corey Anderson (6-1): +130

In Light Heavyweight veteran Jan Błachowicz takes on TUF Season 9 winner Corey Anderson. Błachowicz is a powerful guy with few weaknesses – Anderson is still green. Look for Blachowicz to dictate the pace here and to teach the newcomer a lesson.

MMA Betting Pick: Jan Błachowicz-150

Paige VanZant (5-1): -1600
Alex Chambers (5-2): +900

Future UFC Superstar Paige VanZant will be back in the Octagon Saturday has overwhelming favorite against Alex Chambers. VanZant is an absolute terror – two tiers above Alex Chambers in this one. Chambers has struggled so far in her career and VanZant has looked absolutely unstoppable.

Don’t think it will be any different Saturday night and the 21 year old teaches the 36 year old a lesson.

MMA Betting Pick: Paige VanZant -1600

UFC 191 FOX Sports 1 “Prelims” (8 p.m. ET):

Ross Pearson (17-9): +300 vs. Paul Felder (10-1): -365
MMA Betting Pick: Paul Felder -365

Francisco Rivera (12-4): -105 vs. John Lineker (25-7): -115
MMA Betting Pick: John Lineker -115

Jessica Andrade (13-4): -250 vs. Raquel Pennington (5-5): +210
MMA Betting Pick: Jessica Andrade -250

Clay Collard (14-6): -135 vs. Tiago “Trator” dos Santos (19-5-2, 1 NC): +115
MMA Betting Pick: Tiago “Trator” dos Santos +115

UFC 191 Fight Pass “Prelims” (7 p.m. ET):

Joe Riggs (40-16): +140 vs. Ron Stallings (13-7): -160
MMA Betting Pick: Joe Riggs +140

Joaquim Silva (7-0): +145 vs. Nazareno Malegarie (28-3): -165
MMA Betting Pick: Nazareno Malegarie -165
