CFL Power Rankings: Week 8

Just a few weeks ago, the Eskimos sat atop the CFL Power Rankings. Thanks to a couple of recent losses, they’re losing ground to some of the league’s other elite squads.

Here’s a look at the league’s Week 8 CFL power ratings

1 (1). Winnipeg Blue Bombers
Winnipeg remains at the top of the food chain after yet another victory. Once again, the “D” stepped up as the Bombers topped British Columbia 30-17 and improved to 6-1. A ferocious pass rush is taking care of business for the Bombers, and they tormented B.C. with four sacks, three forced fumbles and an interception. Winnipeg needed just 269 yards from scrimmage to earn the win.

2 (3). Montreal Alouettes
Montreal won for the second time in as many games with an impressive 27-4 romp over the Edmonton Eskimos last week. The win improved the Alouettes to 5-2 on the year, just a single game back of Winnipeg for the East Division lead. Anthony Calvillo reached 400 career touchdown passes and 70,000-plus passing yards. Jamel Richardson was in on both benchmarks, catching seven passes for 110 yards and two scores.

3 (4). Calgary Stampeders
After a bit of a rocky start, the Stampeders are building some nice momentum. The offense was explosive in last week’s 45-35 win over Saskatchewan, which improved Calgary to 5-2 and gives the club a three-game winning streak. Henry Burris was lethally efficient, going 21-for-for-29 for 298 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions. He was sacked just once.

4 (2). Edmonton Eskimos
The Eskimos are tumbling down the rankings. They’ve lost back-to-back contests, and last week’s 27-4 loss to Montreal was downright embarrassing. The offense was completely out of synch, and the club finished with just seven rushing attempts for minus-one yards. More balance will be crucial for improvement against British Columbia this week.

5 (5). Hamilton Tiger-Cats
Hamilton holds its ground after beating Toronto 37-32—not exactly an impressive feat these days. The Tiger-Cats are treading water in the East, as the victory moved them to 4-3 on the year. It was a nice reminder as to why some observers with Hamilton as a sneaky playoff threat; the club racked up nearly 40 points thanks to Kevin Glenn’s rock-solid performance (22-31, 310 yards, two touchdowns, zero interceptions). 6 (8). British Columbia Lions
The Lions won their first game of the year in Week 7, but they were back to their losing ways in Week 8, falling 30-17 to British Columbia. The Lions needed two quarterbacks to get through the game, though neither were effective—Travis Lulay and Jarious Jackson combined to go 18-for-42 for 227 yards, one touchdown, one interception and four sacks. Lulay got the start but was benched partway through the game.

7 (7). Toronto Argonauts
Argos quarterback Cleo Lemon has taken a ton of criticism during his stay in Toronto, but he put up very impressive numbers in last week’s 37-32 loss to Hamilton (368 yards, three scores, no picks). It was the defense that let the club down, which shouldn’t be a surprise at this point—the Boatmen own the CFL’s second-worst “D”.

8 (8). Saskatchewan Roughriders
Saskatchewan is still stuck with one measly win after last week’s 45-35 loss to Calgary. Darian Durant and the offense have been anaemic all season, as the club has scored the fewest points in the league. That changed in last week’s 35-point explosion, but it may not matter—the Roughriders still posses the CFL’s worst “D”. At least the club has a chance to climb up the rankings this week, as it takes on the woeful Argonauts.
