The Edmonton Eskimos looked like a team that could not be slowed after five weeks – five straight wins to start the season opened a few eyes in the CFL. Then reality crept into the equation – a combination of injuries particularly in the receiving corp. and overachievement has brought the Eskimos back down to earth.
Do we need a few examples of why most think that the Eskimos hot start was a fluke? The offense has scored a grand total of 21 points during their three game losing streak (one point in their last outing), Ricky Ray has one touchdown and six interceptions in three games and the offensive line gave up a whopping eight sacks in their last game versus BC. Nothing is going right for this team – they are in a hole that they cannot seem to crawl out of. [ad-4437448]
Calgary on the other hand looks like the class of the Western Conference at this point in time. Four straight wins highlighted by an incredible victory last week versus Montreal has the Stampeders looking like the team to beat. The offense is clicking and the defense is more than holding its own.
Not that All-Star quarterback Henry Burris needed anymore weapons but Johnny Forzani stepped up and was one of three Calgary receivers that gained over 100 yards against Montreal. Burris has now passed for 1061 yards, seven touchdowns and only one interception in his last three games and has risen to second in the CFL in passing yards. With Joffrey Reynolds in the backfield, Calgary looks mighty difficult to stop.
