Michigan Wolverines vs. Louisville Cardinals Preview

That game was the first one for the Cardinals in the Big Dance where they did not win by double digits. NCAAB lines have Louisville as 4-point favorites with a total of 138.

CLICK GRAB OUR BEST Expert CBB Hoops Picks for 2013 GAMBLING season!

In their Final 4 wins Louisville beat Wichita State 72-68 and Michigan beat Syracuse 61-56.

On the season Michigan is 19-16-1 ATS and they have an Over/Under record of 21-15 and Louisville is 23-16 ATS and they have an Over/Under record of 19-14.

Louisville has been solid on both sides of the court in the Big Dance and the big question is can their pressure defense force the Wolverines into turning the ball over? Michigan has a solid backcourt and this season Michigan led the nation with the fewest turnovers per game.

Louisville leading scorer Russ Smith (18.9 ppg) is averaging 25 ppg on 50% shooting in the Big Dance. Overall, the Cardinals are shooting over 53% from the floor in the tournament, so the Wolverines’ defense has their work cut out for them.

The Wolverines have a solid backcourt duo with the 2 leading scorers of Tim Hardaway Jr. and Trey Burke, but FW Mitch McGary is leading the team in the tournament averaging 16 ppg and 11.6 rpg after averaging 7.5 ppg and 6.3 rpg in the regular season.

Michigan shot less than 40% in the win over Syracuse and Burke was only 1-8 from the floor for 7 points. He and Hardaway have to play well in this game and their play holding onto the rock will be key.

Luke Hancock came off the bench to score 20 points in the Wichita State game and he made 3 of his 5 3-pointers. The Wolverines have to play solid perimeter D and not allow Louisville to get open looks from deep.

In some betting trends for this NCAA title game Michigan is 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games overall and they have an Over record of 12-5-1 in their last 18 neutral site games.

Louisville is 10-2 ATS in their last 12 games overall, 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record, and they have an Over record of 9-0 in their last 9 games.

Jason’s Pick: I think Michigan will handle the Louisville pressure in this game and it will be a close contest. Louisville may win, but Michigan will not get blown out and they will cover the spread.

2013 Final Four – National Championship Game

Louisville

Louisville eventually came through because of their defense.

They seemed to tire out Wichita State then pounced upon them. They won because they were far better in the last 5 minutes.

This team has shown the ability to close out victories – I am looking at you Duke.

CLICK GRAB OUR BEST Expert CBB Hoops Picks for 2013 GAMBLING season!

Guard Russ Smith may have led with 21 points but reserve forward Luke Hancock was the star of the game for Louisville. His hot shooting chipped in 20 points and it seems like he was in the middle of everything good they were doing in the second half.

Smith is the lone constant for Louisville and from game to game other players step up.

They are going to need some kind of rebound performance by center Georgui Dieng who didn’t score and had trouble with fouls.

Louisville is the top defensive club in the nation and Michigan is the top offensive club. Who will prevail? Some like to say that defense always travels and that is why Louisville is the favourite in this one.

The number seems right but I am not sure the chalk is the way to go after what I saw on Saturday night.

Michigan

The 61 points Michigan scored against Syracuse was the most the Orange gave up in the tournament. It was also the least the Wolverines have scored in the tournament – but it was just enough. Like Louisville, Big Blue got some unexpected contributions in this.

The fact that they struggled but still ultimately prevailed bodes well as Louisville is likely to smother them for some stretch of the game on Monday night.
<iframe id="ipreview" frameborder="0" width="250" height="250"src="http://www.vrbmarketing.com/widgets/odds_widget.php?w=250&h=250&ls=NFL-NCAAF-NHL-MLB-NBA&b=3&af=1217&pid=1292" scrolling="no" class="alignleft" style="border:5px solid #ccc" >

Michigan will look to get its lead dog going against Louisville. Guard Trey Burke was an important part of their win over the Orange even though he scored just 7 points. Oddly enough his only two sub double digit scoring efforts of the season have come in this tournament.

Being hounded by Smith or Peyton Siva is hardly the ideal way to get the juices flowing but he will be happy to not see that 2-3 zone. Hopefully shooter Nick Stauskas will feel the same way.

He didn’t knock down a single shot against the Orange after being just lethal against Florida.

I am not saying Michigan is a lock but I think they are the better value side. I think both teams will excel at what they do best.

At points in the game the Cardinals will clamp down on Michigan while at others the Wolverines offense will flow beautifully.

In the end I think that this one, like so many others, will come down to the final possession.

Spread Pick: Michigan +4
O/U Pick: Under
Score Prediction: Michigan 67 – Louisville 63

Syracuse

They might not have been the most exciting games to watch because Syracuse was in control most of both but they are playing great right now and you have to like their chances to cut down the nets, even if they do have to play Louisville.

CLICK GRAB OUR BEST Expert CBB Hoops Picks for 2013 GAMBLING season!

Second year point guard Michael Carter-Williams has really come on of late. He is so long that he sometimes looks very awkward out there but he has has been shooting it straighter of late and even led the team in rebounds against Marquette. He makes this team very hard to guard because he has the ball in his hands a lot even though he is maybe the 4th option.

He is going to be a tough guard for Tim Hardaway Jr.

These are two very good teams playing their best basketball of the season right now. Given that you can get an extra couple of points cushion with the underdog it is very tempting but I am not sure that is the smart play here.

I think Michigan will be able to get into that zone better than the teams we have seen the Orange play recently and will win comfortably.

Michigan

When you combine the last five minutes of regulation from their win against Kansas and the first 10 minutes of their win against Florida it might be the best 15 minutes of basketball any team has played all season long. They furiously came back against the Jayhawks but they were just plain dominant against the Gators.

The Wolverines have a lot of talent and it finally seems like it is all coming together. Any chance all of it sticks around for another season in Ann Arbour?

In watching Michigan through the first three rounds many were saying what happened to shooter Nick Stauskas. Against Florida he went off making corner three and corner three on his way to a game high 22 points. His performance overshadowed the fact that Trey Burke was not very good shooting the ball, though he did chip in 8 boards and 7 assists.

Stauskas makes this team almost impossible to guard as they can go inside out as well as slash to the rim with Hardaway and Glenn Robinson III.

Both teams have looked good but the Wolverines have looked better.

The thing I like best is that they are able to score lots of points while having different offensive focuses.

Hardaway hasn’t been a huge factor in this tournament but I have a hunch his midrange game and defense on Carter-Williams are about to put him front and center – in a good way.

Spread Pick: Michigan -2
O/U Pick: Over
Score Prediction: Michigan 77 – Syracuse 71

Louisville

They took a close game against Duke and turned it into a blowout in a way that maybe no other team really could. A spot in the Finals seems all but assured given they get to square off against Wichita State but this team is so focused I doubt they will take the Shockers lightly.

Guard Kevin Ware is getting a lot of attention because of his injury and attitude but the reality is this team is so deep his absence will hardly make a difference. Leading scorer Russ Smith is the most indispensable player on any Final Four squad and he showed it against by scoring 23 points despite not making a single three pointer against Duke.

CLICK GRAB OUR BEST Expert CBB Hoops Picks for 2013 GAMBLING season!

It was his lowest output since the tournament opener but he is still the leader in the MOP race.

Louisville has covered in three of four NCAA tourney contests winning by big margins against everyone but Oregon.

At -10 you would think this would invite underdog action but this team is looking so good it seems very reasonable. To bet against the Cardinals is to say this one will be close down the stretch. That doesn’t seem likely.

Wichita State

The Shockers might have travelled down an easier path due to La Salle’s success in this tournament but they still had to beat the top two seeds in the Western Region to make it to the Final Four. Last week’s win over Ohio State seemed even more improbable than their victory over #1 Gonzaga.

Their defense was suffocating against the Buckeyes, a feat that will be hard to match against the more agile and faster paced Cardinals on Saturday night.

Wichita State was hardly the offensive juggernaut against OSU but their balanced attack got the job done. 4 players cracked double digits even though they didn’t really shoot it well. Against Louisville they are going to need their guards to have fantastic days handling the rock.

They turned it over 12 times against Ohio State and if they go beyond that against Louisville’s pressure they will be in big trouble.

If you like Wichita State then wait as close to tip time as possible. This one could easily slide a couple of more points in that direction even though that is not a great play given the talent difference between these teams.

They have been outclassed a couple of times in this tournament and overcome but the style of Louisville will make that even harder this time around.

Spread Pick: Louisville -10
O/U Pick: Under
Score Prediction: Louisville 68 – Wichita State 57

Wichita State Shockers vs. Louisville Cardinals Preview

The Shockers are a shock to make the Final 4 and in their region they took out the top 2 seeds of Gonzaga and Ohio State. NCAAB lines have Louisville as big 10.5-point favorites with a total of 132.

CLICK GRAB OUR BEST Expert CBB Hoops Picks for 2013 GAMBLING season!

In their Elite 8 games Louisville beat Duke 85-63 and Wichita State beat Ohio State 70-66.

On the season Wichita State is 19-14-2 ATS and they have an Over/Under record of 14-15 and Louisville is 23-15 ATS and they have an Over/Under record of 18-14.

The Cardinals have play a great pressure defense and a well-balanced offense and they have yet to be tested in the Big Dance winning all 4 of their games by at least 12 points.

Louisville leading scorer Russ Smith averaged 18.9 ppg this season and in the 3 tourney games he has scored 27 points, 31 points, and 23 points. He and fellow G Peyton Siva (9.9 ppg), who scored 16 points in the win over Duke, are lightning quick and they gave the Duke backcourt major problems.

Louisville 6’11″ C Gorgui Dieng (10.2 ppg 9.5 rpg) scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the win over Duke and he and FW Chane Behanan give the Cardinals a solid frontcourt, so the Shockers need to play good all around defense to win this game.
<iframe id="ipreview" frameborder="0" width="250" height="250"src="http://www.vrbmarketing.com/widgets/odds_widget.php?w=250&h=250&ls=NFL-NCAAF-NHL-MLB-NBA&b=3&af=1217&pid=1292" scrolling="no" class="alignleft" style="border:5px solid #ccc" >

For Wichita State they are led by the frontcourt duo of Cleanthony Early (13.7 ppg 5.3 rpg) and Carl Hall (12.5 ppg 6.9 rpg) and they also have a solid backcourt. Their G play will be key not only in the scoring department, but holding onto the rock facing a great Louisville press defense.

The Shcokers only shot 37.3% from the field on the win over Ohio State, but they won with their D that held the Buckeyes to only 31.1% from the floor. Their D will be key and they need to repeat their performance they did against Ohio State shooting the 3-pointer well and attacking the rim and getting easy points from the charity stripe.

In some betting trends for this Final 4 match up Wichita State is -0 ATS in their last 4 games overall, 5-0 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games, and they have an Over record of 5-1 in their last 6 non-conference games.

Louisville is 9-1 ATS in their last 10 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record and they have an Over record of 8-0 in their last 8 games.

Jason’s Pick: Wichita State has had an impressive run to the Final 4, but Louisville is on fire and they will not only win this game they will also cover the double-digit spread.

Syracuse Orange vs. Michigan Wolverines Preview

NCAAB lines have Michigan as 2-point favorites with a total of 132.

In their last games Michigan beat Florida 79-59 and Syracuse beat Marquette 55-39.

CLICK GRAB OUR BEST Expert CBB Hoops Picks for 2013 GAMBLING season!

On the season Michigan is 18-16-1 ATS and they have an Over/Under record of 21-14 and Syracuse is 20-15 ATS and they have an Over/Under record of 15-18.

Syracuse is led by the frontcourt duo of James Southerland and C.J. Fair and while neither played great in the Marquette game the Orange played awesome defense holding the Golden Eagles to a paltry FG% of 22.6%. The Orange had to play good D since they only shot 38% from the field.

It is key that the guards of Michael Carter-Williams and Brandon Triche shoot the rock well to open up the lane for the big guys,

Cuse only was 5/17 from 3-point land in the win over Marquette and they have to shoot the deep ball better against Michigan.

Tim Hardaway Jr. and Trey Burke lead the great Michigan backcourt and while these guys struggled with their shot in the win over Florida fellow G Nik Stauskas was simple on fire in the game scoring 22 points and hitting all 6 of his 3-pointers. The Orange cannot let the Wolverines have open looks fron deep or they may lose badly just like Florida did.

Mitch McGary and Glenn Robinson III are the 2 main guys in the frontcourt for the Wolverines and if the Orange pack the perimeter to stop the solid backcourt these 2 may have big games like they did in the Elite 8 match up with Kansas.

The Orange have to be careful with the rock facing an athletic Michigan team that forced Florida into 15 turnovers.

In some betting trends for this Final 4 game Michigan is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record and they have an Over record of 5-2 in their last 7 non-conference games.

Syracuse is 9-3 ATS in their last 12 non-conference games, 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record, and they have an Under record of 17-7 in their last 24 games following a ATS win.

Jason’s Pick: Michigan the real deal and with their balanced team they will win this game and cover to advance to the National Championship.

The final score of Louisville vs. Oregon probably didn’t tell the true story of the game. It looked kind of close but really the Cardinals were in control – no surprise.

Louisville

For bettors it was a disappointment as the Cards failed to cover for the first time in the tournament.

Now they square off against Duke, a team they lost to back in November…when they were missing center Georgui Dieng.

CLICK GRAB OUR BEST Expert CBB Hoops Picks for 2013 GAMBLING season!

Guard Russ Smith was fantastic once again scoring 31 points even though he made just one three pointer. He made 12 of 14 from the free throw line showing the versatility to his game – I am not sure the Blue Devils have a good counter for him defensively.

It seems like every tournament game a new face steps forward for Louisville. Against the Ducks it was sophomore guard Kevin Ware, who more than doubled his seasonal average with 11 points.

To demonstrate how unlikely that was – it was his first double digit game since the first game of the season.

Louisville continues to roll and the fact that they did not beat Oregon by 20 probably makes them even more valuable in this one. They are playing great but you have to think that there are some who are going to see that loss to Duke and get on the Blue Devils to bring this one down further.

Let’s hope so.

Duke

I thought Friday night would be the end of the line for Duke. Michigan State fights you in a way that most teams don’t and I thought Duke wouldn’t be able to respond. I certainly did not see them being able to get the Spartans bigs off their games the way they did, holding them to 30% shooting from the field.

If they still have something left in their tank they are going to need it all to beat Louisville one more time and earn a trip to the Final Four.

Guard Seth Curry had a fantastic shooting game in leading the Dookies over MSU but I don’t see that happening against Louisville this time around. He was 3 for 11 in that early season victory, a game where center Mason Plumlee was the top scorer.

Plumlee will definitely find it harder this time around and the Blue Devils will likely need to get at least some production from their bench. In the victory over LU only 3 of 76 points came from subs.

It’s Duke so you can’t run your mouth off and say they can’t win…they almost always do. Still I think it will be much harder for them to do what they did again in this game.

Louisville is looking super hungry and their defense is better now than the last time they played.

It is hard to beat a team that good twice.

Spread Pick: Louisville -3.5
O/U Pick: Under
Score Prediction: Louisville 69 – Duke 62

Michigan Wolverines vs. Florida Gators Preview

Florida ended Florida Gulf Coast’s Cinderella won and while they won that game by double digits they did not shoot the rock well. NCAAB lines have Florida as 3-point favorites in this game with a total of 131.

CLICK GRAB OUR BEST Expert CBB Hoops Picks for 2013 GAMBLING season!

In their last game Michigan beat Kansas 87-85 in OT and Florida beat Florida Gulf Coast 62-50.

On the season Michigan is 17-16-1 ATS and they have an Over/Under record of 20-14 and Florida is 18-15 ATS and they have an Over/Under record of 12-18.

In this South Region title game Florida is the 3rd seed and Michigan is the 4th seed.

While Michigan did not play great D in the Kansas game allowing the Jayhawks to shoot almost 55% from the field their offense came up big shooting almost 50% from the floor and all 5 starters all scored in double figures.

While Michigan is known for their great backcourt led by Player of the Year candidate Trey Burke, who scored 23 points in the win over Kansas, and Tim Hardaway Jr. FW Mitch McGary was the big gun in the Kansas game with 25 points and 14 boards. If the Wolverines can play a solid all around game they have a good chance to pull off the upset. <img img class="alignleft" style="border:5px solid #ccc"; width:250px; height:250px; src="http://www.capperspicks.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Ray-300x250.gif" alt="Cappers Picks" border="0" />

Florida only shot 38.6% from the floor in their win over Florida Gulf Coast, but they played good D and they forced 20 turnovers with their very athletic backcourt.

The 2 leading scorers of the Gators in Erik Murphy and Kenny Boynton only combined for 11 points in the Florida Gulf game and these 2 guys may have to get back to scoring if they are going to beat a deep Michigan team.

Neither team is a great rebounding one, but each was solid on the boards in their last game. That is especially key for the Wolverines, who have such great shooters in the backcourt.

In some betting trends for this South Region final Michigan is 7-1 ATS in their last 8 neutral site games, 5-1 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games, and they have an Over record of 11-4-1 in their last 16 neutral site games.

Florida is 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record and they have an Under record of 10-2 in their last 12 games overall.

Jason’s Pick: I have to go with Michigan in this game, as they are coming off a great win over Kansas and while their backcourt is great their frontcourt has come up big in the Big Dance. Michigan will at least cover the spread.

CLICK GRAB OUR BEST Expert CBB Hoops Picks for 2013 GAMBLING season!

In their last games Syracuse beat Indiana 61-50 and Marquette beat Miami 71-61.

On the season Syracuse is 19-15 ATS and they have an Over/Under record of 15-17 and Marquette is 14-15-1 ATS and they have an Over/Under record of 17-12.

Syracuse plays a tough 2/3 defense and in the win over Indiana they shut down the Hoosiers offense holding them to a FG% of 33.3%.

Michael Carter-Williams went for 24 points in the win over Indiana and while the team’s 2 leading scorers for the season in forward C.J. Fair and James Southerland only combined for 11 points they did combine for 16 rebounds. Carter-Williams is a tough match up because of his size in the backcourt and with the solid FW duo Marquette will have to play good all around defense in this game.

The Golden Eagles played a great all around game in their upset win over Miami shooting 54% from the floor and holding Miami to only 34.9% shooting.

Marquette backup forward Davante Gardner is 290 pounds and scored 14 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in the win over Miami. He creates spacing problems for the Orange zone defense and in the earlier win over Syracuse during the regular season he scored a career high 26 points.

Vander Blue is the leading scorer for the Golden Eagles on the season and he scored 14 points in the win over Miami. While his offense will obviously is key so is his defense, as he and the Marquette guards will be facing a Syracuse team that can really shoot the 3-pointer. Carter-Williams, Brandon Triche and James Southerland can all shot the 3 well and the Golden Eagles have to keep these guys from getting open looks from deep.

In some betting trends for this East Region championship game Syracuse is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS win and they have an Under record of 16-7 in their last 23 games following a ATS win.

Marquette is 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record, -4-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall, and they have an Over record of 4-1 in their last 5 games.

Jason’s Pick: Syracuse is 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games against Marquette, but that trend will not continue. The Orange are a better and more balanced team and their D will play well again, as Syracuse will win, cover the spread, and advance to the Final 4.

Ohio State

It is hard to argue with the overall success but before you get too giddy remember that the Buckeyes were +3.5, leaving many bettors frustrated with the result.

For the second game in a row the Buckeyes got quality play out of forward LaQuinton Ross, at least at the offensive end. This time it was him who hit the game winning shot, one of many solid contributions throughout the second half.

Wichita State is a fundamentally sound team and I am sure they have watched tape of the Buckeyes the last two games.

CLICK GRAB OUR BEST Expert CBB Hoops Picks for 2013 GAMBLING season!

Now OSU will be challenged to find a third scoring option assuming the Shockers will not let Ross or forward DeShaun Thomas to get off (relatively).

I never thought Ohio State would make it this far. Now that they have and get the opportunity to face off against Wichita State I think they will thrive in the favourite role. Their defensive intensity is tough to prep for and should be enough to make this one not come down to the last possession of the ball game.

Wichita State

On Thursday night, for the first time in this tournament did what it was supposed to do: beat a lower seeded opponent (prior to they had been upsetting higher seeded foes).
<iframe id="ipreview" frameborder="0" width="250" height="250"src="http://www.vrbmarketing.com/widgets/odds_widget.php?w=250&h=250&ls=NFL-NCAAF-NHL-MLB-NBA&b=3&af=1217&pid=1292" scrolling="no" class="alignleft" style="border:5px solid #ccc" >

They eliminated scrappy La Salle and now have the pleasure of playing a probably more scrappy, and definitely more talented, Ohio State team.

The Shockers didn’t give an inch in beating #1 seed Gonzaga to get to this point so I don’t think they will be overwhelmed at all as they look to continue their impressive run.

The Shockers beat the Explorers by playing a solid all around game. WSU dominated the smaller La Salle squad on the glass. almost doubling them in rebounds. They will need to hold their own in that area against the Buckeyes, who are longer but not blessed with amazing rebounders.

Guard Malcolm Armstead lead the team with 18 points but might find it harder with Aaron Craft all up in his grill on Saturday.

I don’t expect the Shockers to lay down but they might be outclassed in this Elite Eight matchup. They have already exceeded expectations and this is probably their toughest assignment yet.

I was surprised the number wasn’t greater on this one as I think there is a chance this one gets away from them.

Spread Pick: Ohio State -4.5
O/U Pick: Over
Score Prediction: Ohio State 70 – Wichita State 60
