Miami Dolphins vs. Arizona Cardinals Pick / Trends

Oddsmakers currently have the Cardinals listed as 7-point favorites for Sunday’s Miami Dolphins and Arizona Cardinals battle at University of Phoenix Stadium.

Warner, Cardinals, Looks To Get Off to Solid 2-0 Start

The Arizona Cardinals, (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS, 0-1 O/U) took one small step toward what they hope will be their first postseason appearance since 1998.

The Cardinals did nothing in their 23-13 road victory over the San Francisco 49ers in their season opener last week to make anyone think they can not reach the playoffs this season. Arizona also has another matchup this week that should help get them get off to a solid 2-0 start.

This week’s foe, the Miami Dolphins (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS, 0-1 O/U), are rebuilding in a big way after going 1-15 in 2007. The Fish played respectable football in losing their season opener 20-14 to the New York Jets last week.

Miami got two touchdowns and 251 passing yards from quarterback Chad Pennington, but didn’t run the ball nearly as much as I thought they would this season, giving Ricky Williams just 10 carries, (24 yards) and Ronnie Brown just six carries, (23 yards).

Miami’s defense also allowed Favre to go an efficient 15-for-22 with two touchdowns while veteran running back Thomas Jones added another 101 yards on the ground with one score.

The Cardinals got solid performances out of their veteran leaders as Kurt Warner completed 19-of-30 passes for 197 yards and one touchdown and running back Edgerrin James rushed for 100 yards on 26 carries. Defensively, Arizona sacked Niners quarterback J.T. O’Sullivan four times.

Here is a look at some of the key trends for each club, followed by my analysis and NFL Gambling Free Picks:

The Dolphins are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
The Dolphins are 5-2-2 ATS in their last 9 games following a ATS loss.
The Cardinals are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games in September.
The Cardinals are 11-4 ATS in their last 15 games on grass.
The Over is 4-0 in Dolphins last 4 games following a S.U. loss.
The Under is 10-1 in Dolphins last 11 games in Week 2.
The Over is 11-2 in Cardinals last 13 games following a ATS win.
The Under is 5-1 in Cardinals last 6 games in Week 2.

NFL Odds

Miami Dolphins +6½ -110
Arizona Cardinals -6½ -110

Over 38 -110
Under 38 -110

Analysis: Things don’t look good for the Dolphins in this matchup. The Cardinals are at home and have a solid offense that creates plenty of problems with Warner leading what is arguably the most talented set of starting skill position players in the league.

While Arizona’s defense is still in the process of growing and learning together, I just don’t think the Dolphins will be able to beat the Cardinals in this contest at home. While Miami kept the score close against the Jets last week, losing by only six points, I think the Cardinals and their explosive offense lead backers to a narrow cover in this contest.
