To bet on
the Super Bowl is to be a part of the
very fabric of American sports. Millions
of people who do not even watch football
have already placed bets on Super Bowl
XLII, featuring the New York Giants and
their record ten-game road win streak,
facing the New England Patriots and their
record 18-0, so far, season. The people
who keep track of these things expect another
record breaking year in terms of dollars
wagered on the Superbowl in Las Vegas this
year, with the total expected to shoot
over the $100-million mark for the first
time. Football is America’s pastime,
no one could argue, but Super Bowl betting
is becoming a pastime in its own right.
New
York Giants +11.5 vs. New England Patriots –11.5
FOX, who
will be televising the event, is selling
approximately 85 30-second ad spaces
to run during the game and the average
price for those 30-second spots is expected
to be between $2.7- to 3-million. Breaking
that down, you’ll find this means
that the companies who are paying for those
ads are buying into the idea that it is
worth it for their product to be seen on
a show that is going to charge them about
$90,000 per second of ad time.
Super Bowl Betting: 6:20 p.m. EST in Glendale,
Arizona
Consider
the fact that FOX also owns and broadcasts
the show American Idol, America’s
number one watched program, and how much
they must make off the ads for that show.
They must also pay a fair amount, or at
least lose a lot by advertising their own
show in slots that they could otherwise
be paying for during other shows. FOX is
going to strike gold with Super Bowl 42
by the very fact that they got the NFL
to allow Paula Abdul, the washed-up former
Los Angeles Lakers dancer and pop singer,
to open up for Tom Petty during the Super
Bowl halftime show. Abdul is one of the
judges on American Idol and her judging
partner Randy Jackson produced her new
material.
Basically,
FOX will get to charge other companies
$90,000 per second
to advertise their
wares in the middle of an extra long
advertisement for FOX’s own show
at the Super Bowl halftime. Ingenious!
Somebody best be getting a promotion for
this stunt!
While the
prices for the Super Bowl odds probably
won’t let you walk away
with even a percentage point of the killing
FOX will make off this game, you can console
yourself with even a small win from the
BetUS
sportsbook just by knowing you had
nothing to do with putting that horrible
talent show on the air.
