NFL Football Betting Preview - Saint's Alive at 22 to 1?
It’s
not even June yet, with the exception
of Jake Long, the number one pick in
the NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins,
not a single first-round player has been
signed by his respective team. Yet here
we are dreaming of gridiron sports betting
glory with our BetUS online futurebook
wagers. Why? Because like the NFL Network
claims, football is indeed 24/7.
Admit it. As a BetUS online sportsbook
betting fan, you were glued to your television
set as the draft numbers kept rolling by,
as the teams kept calling out names, as
Mel Kiper Jr. with the great hair kept
saying how much in love he was with everybody
the Dallas Cowboys selected. Mel sort of
likes everybody who gets selected.
But it takes BetUS sportsbook wagering
fans more time and energy to find a suitable
online future-book wager on one or two
or three or even four legitimate teams
to win the Super Bowl at overlaid odds.
That’s
what the goal will be for a while - -
looking into that crystal ball and finding
teams that could surprise in the Super
Bowl, based on their sports betting odds
in the BetUS online sportsbook.
The first team that has caught my eye
is the New Orleans Saints.

What happened
to the Saints last year? They went into
the season full of promise. Their defense,
on paper, appeared much improved with
the addition of Jason David from the
Indianapolis Colts and Kevin Kaesviharn
from the Cincinnati Bengals. Well, David
turned out be the new version of “toast” while
Kaesviharn could barely keep up with the
hot-shot wide receivers in the NFC. That
means that the Saints, coming off a division
win and a trip to the NFC Championship
game, didn’t make the playoffs.
But well-managed
NFL teams don’t
just sit on their laurels when they get
successful or, more importantly, when they
are coming off a down year. They try to
get better.

That’s
exactly what the Saints did. First, they
resigned wide receivers Devery Henderson,
Terrance Copper and David Patten, running
back Aaron Stecker, tight-ends Eric Johnson
and Billy Miller and offensive guard/center
Jonathan Goodwin on offense. Then they acquired
cornerbacks Aaron Glenn and Randall Gay,
defenseive end Bobby McCray and linebackers
Dan Morgan and Jonathan Vilma. Finally, they
signed quarterback Mark Brunell to back-up
Drew Brees as well as center Matt Leher from
their rivals, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
But the Saints
weren’t done just yet.
What they did in the draft was remarkable.
They traded up to take defensive lineman
Sedrick Ellis who was ranked ahead of the
first defensive lineman taken in the draft,
Glenn Dorsey, on some boards. Then, they
nabbed cornerback Tracey Porter and in the
fifth round got a steal in offensive lineman
Carl Nicks from the University of Nebraska.
It indeed appears
as if the Saints will be alive in the 2008 – 2009
season!
Currently, the BetUS online futurebook odds
on the New Orleans Saints to win the Super
Bowl are 22 to 1. In assessing their chances,
I not only have to take into account all
of the improvements the Saints have done,
but their schedule as well as their chances
to win the NFC South Division.
First, their schedule appears extremely
difficult. Unfortunately for the Saints they
have to play the AFC West this year. So,
besides having to suit up against the Tampa
Bay Buccaneers, Atlanta Falcons and Carolina
Panthers twice this season (all three teams
appear to have improved as well!) the Saints
have to play an improved Oakland Raiders
squad, the San Diego Chargers at Wembley
Stadium in London, and the Denver Broncos
and Kansas City Chiefs on the road. Finally,
the Saints play the Washington Redskins,
the Chicago Bears, the Green Bay Packers
and the Minnesota Vikings this season.
I hate to say
this but the Saints will have to go four
and four against the eight teams I’ve highlighted above who aren’t
on their schedule to be real contenders for
the Super Bowl.
Second, what
about their chances of winning the NFC
South Division? There is no doubt that
the Saints should win the South Division
for the simple fact that they might have
just made themselves a defense that could
shut-down most of their competitors’ offenses.
The main question then is whether or not
the BetUS online wagering odds on the Saints
to win the Super Bowl - - 22 to 1 - - are
fair.
In terms of
their overall schedule I would have to
say no, but in terms of their chances to
win their division, I have to say yes.
I’m going to set my personal odds line
on the New Orleans Saints to win the Super
Bowl at 25 to 1. If, for some reason, their
odds float up to 25 to 1 before now and the
second week of the season, I’ll put
a wager on these guys.
