The Chicago Bears (7-9 SU & ATS in 2007 regular season), who went through a bitter disappointment in defending their NFC title last season, will try to get off to a better start when they take the field in their first pre-season game of 2008. The opposition will be the Kansas City Chiefs (4-12 SU, 7-8-1 ATS), a team in transition. This Thursday (August 7) contest will get underway at 8 PM ET at Soldier Field in the Windy City.

Tyler Thigpen may be the guy getting the most action at quarterback on Thursday, because Brodie Croyle, now comfortably in the starter's role as Kansas City decides what they really have, and Damon Huard, the veteran, won't likely be overtaxed the first time out. Thigpen, who played his college ball at Coastal Carolina, is a raw talent and athlete but is strictly developmental, and couldn't stick with the quarterback-starved Vikings last season. So the learning curve is steep, for sure.
There really is no quarterback competition in Kansas City, where coach Herman Edwards and offensive coordinator Chan Gailey seem committed to giving Croyle a full season to sink or swim, but there is a competition in Chicago, where Rex Grossman, who is brilliant when on his "A" game but utterly useless when he's not, is being pushed by Kyle Orton, who functioned as the team's starter a few years ago.
You've probably heard that the Chiefs are committed to something of a youth movement, and that is what might present a problem. The latest information is that two of the big-ticket rookies, defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey and offensive tackle Branden Albert, are going to be unavailable for this game. Dorsey, of course, is expected to be the anchor of the D-line for years to come, but he is out as a precaution with a knee injury. Albert might miss most, if not all of the pre-season with a foot ailment, and that hurts because he is being counted on to protect Croyle, and thus needs all the snaps he can get. So Thigpen is getting more time, and we will improvise.
The Bears need a running game, and what might be good news for them is that two backs who have a great work ethic - Garrett Wolfe and rookie Matt Forte - will be penciled in for extended playing time. Add to that Adrian Peterson (no, not THAT Adrian Peterson) and newly-signed Kevin Jones, and all of sudden, for the exhibition season, Chicago has a deep running back situation.
That may be enough for them to cover this number against a Kansas City team that doesn't seem to get out of the box for the pre-season (2-10 SU & ATS last 12), will probably have itself together offensively, and will be short-handed, It's the Bears as the favorite in the BetUS NFL football pre-season betting odds.
