NFL Pro Football Futures Betting - Are the Bengals Tigers?
BetUS Sportsbook has its football betting odds up for winning the Super Bowl, as well as each of the NFL's eight divisions and two conferences. One of the teams who made it to the playoffs in 2005 but has been disappointing since then is the Cincinnati Bengals (7-9 SU, 6-9-1 ATS in 2007), who have a lot of offensive punch but not much in the way of anything else. Will sports betting fans fortunes improve in 2008? That's what we will examine today.
First let's look at the NFL football betting
odds to win the AFC and AFC North divisions,
as they appear in BetUS Sportsbook:

It remains to be seen how much of a distraction
the trade demands of Chad Johnson will
be. But Johnson should find himself in
the lineup from season's start, and that
means the Bengals will once again have
a passing attack that is among the league's
best. Johnson caught 93 passes for 1440
yards last season, supplying more of the
downfield threat while T.J. Houshmandzadeh,
his teammate in college, snared 112 passes
to tie for the league lead with Wes Welker
and made it to his first Pro Bowl.

Ben Utecht, who played tight end at Indianapolis
last year, was added along with two potentially
explosive rookie wide receivers in Andre
Caldwell (Florida) and Jerome Simpson (Coastal
Carolina).
Carson Palmer is probably at or near the
top of the list of those quarterbacks who
come in at a notch or two below Peyton Manning
and Tom Brady. Last season he threw for 4131
yards and 26 touchdowns, but he also tossed
20 picks, and that was a problem. Without
a dependable running game last season, Palmer
was forced to throw more; indeed, he had
49 more passing attempts last year than he
did in 2006.
Coach Marvin Lewis hopes to address that
by emphasizing the run more. There are no
new backs on board, but Rudi Johnson is presumed
to be healthy, and there is hope that the
former Auburn star can get back to the level
of play he exhibited in 2004 and 2005, when
he rushed for 2902 yards in those years combined.
If Willie Anderson can come back healthy
that will be a plus, because he is one of
the best right tackles in the league.
All the offense in the world won't mean
anything unless the Bengals can stop people.
The defense ranked 27th in the league in
terms of yardage allowed, although it must
be said that there were extenuating circumstances
since the team lost just about every linebacker
on the roster. This year there is hope. Some
of those linebackers return, and then there
is Odell Thurman, who is coming off a two-year
suspension, not to mention first-round draft
pick Keith Rivers of USC. The Bengals lost
their top pass rusher Justin Smith, who went
to San Francisco in free agency, but he didn't
leave that big a void. Lewis, who was Baltimore's
defensive coordinator when the Ravens won
the Super Bowl after the 2000 season, hopes
that Antwan Odom, who came over from Tennessee,
can be a big help in that regard. Cincinnati
has two young cornerbacks with some ability
in Leon Hall and Jonathan Joseph, and they
should improve in their second season.
The kick coverage units were God-awful last
season, and that has been attributed to injuries.
But if there isn't a great deal of improvement
in this area, the Bengals are going to continue
losing the battle of field position.
All in all, I would not look for Cincinnati
to be a serious challenger to Pittsburgh
or Cleveland in the division, but they could
hang around the fringes of the wild card
race. A .500 finish is certainly well within
reach.
JAY'S PREDICTION FOR 2008:
Cincinnati Bengals -- 8-8, 3rd place, AFC
North
