NFL Betting: Lions (+ 4) vs. Vikings (- 4)
The Detroit
Lions are on a 3 game losing streak and
now they have to go to Minnesota to take
on one of their more bitter rivals in
the NFL, the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings
are coming off a terrific win versus
the New York Giants. In that game the
Vikings ran back 3 Eli Manning interceptions
for touchdowns. A lot of it had to do
with Eli’s terrible reads, but
some of it does have to do with the fact
that the Vikings pass defense is sort
of gelling.
The Vikes
have been excellent against the run so
far this year. It’s been
their past defense that has suffered. This
year is too late for Brad Childress’s
squad, but if they can find balance in
their offense attack next year and continue
to get their defense to improve, the Vikes
could be very tough come 2008.
Speaking
of Childress, Minnesota would be stupid
to even consider letting this guy go.
He’s a terrific coach who
has turned lemons into lemonade with this
team. They’ve only been blown out
once this year, a 34 to 0 loss to Green
Bay on the road, and have played tough
against the Cowboys, Eagles, and Lions
(earlier in the year) on the road.
Childress is building a very good team
in Minnesota.
Let’s
take a look at a couple of trends that
should shed more light on this game:
The Minnesota Vikings are 10-4-1 against
the spread in their last 15 games versus
a fellow NFC North opponent.
The Detroit Lions are 4-10-1 against the
spread in their last 15 games versus a
fellow NFC North opponent.
The schedule
is definitely getting tougher for the
Lions. That’s not their biggest
issue, though. The biggest issue for Detroit
is that they cannot stop pass-rushers from
getting to QB John Kitna. He spent most
of his Thanksgiving either running for
his life or on his back.
That will
be the big issue here. For some reason,
either Kitna isn’t reading
the blitzes quick enough, or his wide receivers
aren’t on the same page with him,
Kitna is hanging on to the pig-skin way
too long. Sometimes defenses don’t
even have to call blitzes. They’re
using 4 straight rushers to get to him.
Things will
only get worse because the Vikings front-seven
is very, very good and Detroit’s left-tackle, Jeff Backus,
is banged up in this one. He had to leave
last Thursday’s game versus the Packers
due to injury.
All of this
spells doom for the Lions who won’t
be able to stop the Vikings RB duo of
Chester Taylor and Adrian Peterson.
The BetUS
NFL Betting line is Minnesota Vikings – 4
against the spread at home versus the
Detroit Lions.
NFL Free Pick:
I like the Vikes to beat the spread in
this one. The skid continues for the Lions.
