COLLEGE FOOTBALL BETTING LINE: Oklahoma -10
Oklahoma beat Baylor by the score of 52-21
last week, failing to cover as a 39-point
home favorite. Texas Tech lost 59-43 at
Texas, missing the cover as the six-point
dog. Tech coach Mike Leach has been embroiled
in a controversy by severely criticizing
the officials from that game.
HEAD-TO-HEAD college football betting
trends:
* OKLA has covered five of the last six
meetings
* OKLA has won five of the last six meetings
SU
* OKLA has covered four of the last five
meetings in Lubbock
* The road team has covered five of the
last seven meetings
LAST MEETING: In last year's game, Oklahoma,
down 24-20 in the fourth quarter, scored
two unanswered touchdowns to come away
with a 34-24, covering as a 7.5-point home
favorite. The Sooners outgained the Red
Raiders 448-281 in that game.
ABOUT OKLAHOMA:
The Good News -- Oklahoma is rated #3
by the USA Today, #3 by the AP and is #4
in the BCS Standings. With a win against
Texas Tech the Sooners can clinch the Big
12 South title. Quarterback Sam Bradford
is having a sensational year, and would
be up for Heisman consideration if he wasn't
prejudiced by being a freshman. Bradford
leads in the nation's passing efficiency
standings, with 70% completions and 28
TD passes. And he's been sacked only eight
times. The Sooners also rush the football
well, averaging 191 yards a game. And the
defense has been rock-hard against the
run, yielding just 2.5 yards a carry to
opponents.
The Bad News -- That run defense means
next to nothing against Texas Tech, which
has virtually no infantry. As it stands
right now, Oklahoma will probably get shut
out of the national title picture if LSU
and Oregon win the rest of their games.
OKLAHOMA TRENDS:
* OKLA has covered just one of its last
six games
* OKLA has won seven of its last eight
road games SU
* OKLA has played eight of its last nine
road games UNDER the total
ABOUT TEXAS TECH:
The Good News -- Texas Tech throws the
ball about as well as anyone in the country,
under the tutelage of Leach, who was Bob
Stoops' offensive coordinator at Oklahoma
from 1999-2000. Graham Harrell has thrown
for 43 TD's and 4878 yards. And Michael
Crabtree has been an out-and-out freshman
sensation, catching 113 passes for 1707
yards and 20 touchdowns.
The Bad News -- Teams who have been able
to run the ball have feasted on Texas Tech's
defense. Oklahoma State had three 100-yard
rushers in one earlier game, and Texas'
Jamaal Charles chalked up 175 yards in
last week's contest. Interestingly enough,
Oklahoma averages 9.6 yards per pass, about
a yard better than Texas Tech. None of
Texas Tech's wins this year have come against
a nationally-ranked team.
TEXAS TECH TRENDS:
* TT has played four of its last six games
UNDER the total
* TT has won seven of its last eight home
games SU
* TT is 22-9-1 ATS last 32 after a SU
loss
* TT is 23-6 ATS at home in November
Free Pick: CONCLUSION:
Texas Tech's offense is indeed prolific, but physical teams have been known to slow the Red Raiders down. Graham Harrell has had a great year, but Sam Bradford has been every bit his equal, and has kept mistakes down, which is important. Mike Leach's dispute with Big 12 officials has become a distraction. Oklahoma comes in with enough offensive balance to keep Texas Tech OFF balance. We'll lay the points with the Sooners, the 10-point favorite in the BetUS college football betting odds.
