NCAA Football Betting Action - Humanitarian Bowl
Dec.
31 -- Humanitarian Bowl Preview at Boise,
Idaho, Fresno State (8-4) vs. Georgia Tech
(7-5), 2 p.m. (ESPN2)
LAST
POINTSPREAD RESULT: Fresno State beat
New Mexico State 30-23, failing to cover
as a 13.5-point road favorite. Georgia Tech
lost to a red-hot Georgia team 31-17 as a
four-point underdog.
LAST
MEETING: These two teams hooked up
in the 2002 Silicon Valley Bowl. Fresno State
won 30-21 as a 6.5-point dog.
ABOUT FRESNO STATE:
The Good News -- Tom Brandstater (61%) did
a great job cutting down on turnovers, as
he threw just five interceptions all year.
Even without Ryan Matthews, this team can
move the ball on the ground, because running
back depth is a strength. Fresno State was
16th in the country in rushing offense.
The Bad News -- The Bulldogs defense gave
up 410 yards a game, ranking it 76th in the
country. That defense also surrendered five
yards a carry and 183 yards a game.
FRESNO STATE TRENDS:
* FRES won seven of its last nine games
SU
* FRES has played four UNDERS in its last
six games
* FRES has covered four straight as a bowl
underdog
* FRES has covered five of its last eight
games
ABOUT GEORGIA TECH:
The Good News -- Tashard Choice is one of
the best running backs in the country, rumbling
for 1310 yards on 5.3 ypc. The defensive
line has done an outstanding job against
the run, yielding just 2.8 yards a carry.
The Bad News -- The coaching situation was
thrown into disarray when Chan Gailey was
fired after the loss to Georgia. Paul Johnson
of Navy has been signed as the replacement,
but he won't be on the sidelines here. Instead,
it is defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta, and
the staff that is in place does not really
know where it is headed. QB Taylor Bennett
has been mediocre at best, completing 49%
of his passes for six TD's and 9 INT's.
GEORGIA TECH TRENDS:
* GT is 1-6-1 ATS in its last eight games
as a favorite
* The underdog is 11-2-1 ATS in GT's last
14 games
THE BOTTOM
LINE: This is a unique bowl in that it
will most likely be played in the freezing
cold. Therefore, the "fish
out of water" thing comes into play.
Do you really think Georgia Tech wants to
be in Boise? Probably not. And the coaching
upheaval can't possibly be helpful. Certainly
the Yellow Jackets will be able to run the
ball. Fresno State's defense is permissive
enough. But the Bulldogs will stack the line,
because the passing attack it will face is
inferior to most of those they encounter
in the WAC. Brandstater is a much steadier
option than Bennett. And Pat Hill seems to
relish these situations, with four straight
covers as a dog in bowls.
