The Good News -- Penn State ranks sixth
in the country against the run, and eighth
in scoring defense. The Nittany Lions have
also scored 45 sacks against opposition quarterbacks,
second in the country. Maurice Evans had
12.5 of those sacks. Linebacker Dan Connor
was a Butkus Award finalist.
The Bad News -- QB Anthony Morelli threw
18 TD passes, but he is not dynamic and ranked
only 62nd nationally in passing efficiency.
The Nittany Lions covered only one of their
seven games against bowl teams.

The Good News
-- A&M's rushing attack
ranks 13th in the country, with bruising
inside runner Jarvorskie Lane, speedy tailback
Mike Goodson and quarterback Stephen McGee,
who is actually the team's leading rusher
with 858 yards. Dennis Franchione and the
controversy that surrounded him is gone from
the program; former Northwestern coach Gary
Darnell will coach the Aggies in the bowl
game, with ex-Green Bay Packer coach Mike
Sherman taking over after that on a permanent
basis.
The Bad News -- The Aggies were ranked 104th
in the country in pass defense, allowing
261 passing yards per game (and 20 touchdowns).

THE BOTTOM
LINE: Joe Paterno has been a formidable
figure in bowls, covering 22 out of 33
tries. But his Lion team does not really
have the necessary tools to exploit what
would be perceived as Aggie weaknesses. Morelli,
who was a highly-touted high school recruit,
has been somewhat less than fearsome as a
college quarterback, and built most of his
positive stats against very weak teams. Stephen
McGee, on the other hand, is a dual threat,
with the run and also to some degree the
pass. He had 362 yards and three TD passes
in the season finale against Texas. A&M
has also done an exemplary job of protecting
McGee, allowing just 15 sacks, which might
also nullify a Penn State strength. Paterno
is posturing as if he is disappointed his
team didn't contend for a national title.
But as it turns out, this squad just did
not have the stuff to pull that off.
In a game between teams that have balance
offensive attacks, we'll go with the side
that probably has more variety. That's the
Aggies, the 5.5-point underdog in the BetUS
