Kansas City Chiefs (+3) vs. Houston Texans
(-3)
The NFL betting line in this game is 3
points against the Texans. According to
traditional NFL football spread analysis,
the home team is almost always accorded
3 points if everything is equal.
That’s
what makes this play so good. Things
are definitely NOT equal between the
Kansas City Chiefs and the Houston Texans.
While the Houston Texans improved their
offense dramatically by trading for quarterback
Matt Schaub and signing Ahman Green to
carry the ball, the Chiefs went backwards
in the off-season, only signing Larry
Johnson two weeks ago and failing to
name a starting QB until last week. They
also have a very, very young defensive
backfield.
The starter at QB for the Chiefs will
be Damon Huard and, if last year is any
indication, he is going to start the year
off well against the Texans - - right?
Hold on a second there!
The Texans’ defense
should be much improved this year with
DeMeco Ryans and the fella chosen before
Reggie Bush, aka Mario Williams, having
a year under their belts. The offense
might be close to explosive with Andre
Johnson catching Matt Schaub passes and
the before mentioned Ahman Green running
through the tackles.
Trends are virtually
meaningless as the Texans are so different
this year from last year that the teams
can’t be
compared. Kansas City, usually a very good
September team, will find it difficult
to get through the month with more than
one win. While the Texans, a traditional
doormat, look to improve significantly.
Kansas City might give the ball to Larry
Johnson ten or fifteen times, which does
not bode well for the team. With Ryans
and Williams in their front seven, the
Texans should be able to shut down any
running game the Chiefs put forth outside
of Johnson. That leaves Huard to throw
the ball to a guy named Samie Parker and
the aging Eddie Kennison. Sure, Tony Gonzalez
is still there, but the Texans counter
with Ryan.
Patrick Surtain, Ty Law, and Donnie Edwards
are all too old to handle an RB like Ahman
Green and a wide receiver like Andre Johnson.
Flip it around and Michael Bennet, Damon
Huard, Eddie Kennison and Tony Gonzalez,
as great as he is, are too old to get through
a defense made up of DeMeco Ryans, Mario
Williams, Dunta Robinson, and Amobi Okoye.
The NFL Betting
Line: Houston Texans – 3
points against the spread. Take the home
team, the Houston Texans, in this one.
